When data sets are merged, the Sources and Repositories of both data
sets will be in the merged data set. The Sources and Repositories of
the "main" data set will remain un-changed while the Sources and
Repositories of the merged-into data set will be re-numbered. If you
know that certain Sources are duplicated then you can merge them
after the data sets have been merged. In some cases, you may be sure
that those duplicates are, in fact, real duplicates.

But, it is recommended that you be very sure before merging in case
there is something that is slightly different and that you do not
wish to lose. Merging of Source and Repositories works on the
principal that the "duplicate" is exactly duplicate and just reassign
the ID# of the merging Source or Repository with that of the other
Source or Repository after which the merging Source or Repository is deleted.

Hope this helps -
