John,
I agree with everything you say, except about the the need for duplicate Projects? Can't you use the same project in both installations of TMG? I've done so with TMG 7, but I note you mention TMG-4. Is that what you are using? And you can't share the same Data Set?

With TMG 7 I placed the project on a Windows drive, then opened it from the XP Mode installation. The Windows 7 drive, which appears as a shared drive in the virtual machine. I suspect there is a problem with exhibits, but I don't use exhibits in reports (I use them only in Second Site) so I've ignored it.
