I don't know. To figure that out, we need to look at the source of that template. To do that, we need to know:

1. What Source Type is being used for the Source? That appears at the upper left of the General Tab of the Source Definition screen.

2. Were the Templates modified for this Source? You can tell that by looking at the Output Forms tab of the Source Definition screen. Does the term "Overridden" appear to the left of the short footnote Template?

3. What is the short footnote template of the Source? Please copy and paste into an email the contents of the Short Footnote Template.

4. If "Overridden" does appear as described above, What is the Short Footnote Template of the Source Type? To see that, click the Source Type button on the General tab of the Source Definition screen. Then click the Edit button on the Source Types screen that opens. Please copy and paste into an email the Short Footnote Template that appears there.

With these pieces we can figure out where the italics codes probably came from, and more importantly, how to permanently fix the problem. I suspect that the issue is from editing the Source Type, which means the same issue will appear in other Sources, so it would be best to get it fixed.
