I can see how the transcriptionist got Tune. Os and Us are often
interchanged, and a W and a cursive N, often look alike. The l on the end
may have looked like a cursive E.

Teresa,
I agree on this. Although I do not normally record all variants, there are
instances where I must do so. I am now researching Eliza whose married name
is Jones. Her maiden name written on the back of any old photo of
uncertain provenance is "Tyler". Her death certificate gives her maiden
name as "Case". Death certificates of her children give her maiden name as
"Towel" or "Towell". Two transcriptions of Buncombe County, NC marriage
books give her maiden name respectively as "Tune?" and "Tow". From census
work I have done, Tow is probably the correct name and I hope that the
microfilm of the marriage book will provide the needed information.
However, I am recording all variants with sources so that identify any other
records where she might be incorrectly named, and later to properly evaluate
evidence and form a conclusion.
