Ian,

Roles and custom events are totally different things. Roles describe a person's, well, role, _within_ an event. That event can be either a standard event (such as Marriage, which in TMG has standard roles of Bride and Groom) or a custom event. TMG can export custom event types because GEDCOM has a provision to define them. It can't export Roles because there is no provision for them in GEDCOM.
