Lee, I think it would be skewed in TMG's favor even more, since FTM
typically comes out with a new upgrade once a year. HOWEVER, one good point
for TMG even if not, is that my 4.0 data can be read by 7.0. I don't think
that can be said for FTM.

Back in the 1980s, the "Caddilac" of genealogy programs was call
Roots. It cost a nice sum of $250 and did not have all the report
capabilities that we have today (that came later in a separate
program that also cost $250. Roots went through a number of upgrades
(Roots/M to Roots/II to Roots/III top Roots/IV and eventually UFT
[Ultimate Family Tree]). Each upgrade came as a similar cost -- about $250.
A few years ago, someone here did a study of the costs they had of
buying TMG and buying Family Tree Maker (FTM) and acquiring each
upgrade. FTM charges for each upgrade (albeit something like
$15). TMG upgrade costs are only for major releases while
intermediate upgrades (primarily bug fixes but always with new
features) are free. The end result of the study was that it cost
much more to buy FTM than TMG and you got a lot more with TMG.
I don't know how a similar study would do now. I suspect very much the
same.
