Rick, I already do that. I have a specific name style for each tag type. So
IF I were able to specify a NAME STYLE default with each tag type the way we
can specify a PLACE STYLE default, it would greatly speed up data entry. In
the event window when I added the witness, I could get a prompt to add a
name for that NAME STYLE, which would then be attached to that tag. The
primary name would never be affected that way.
If a default NAME STYLE was not associated with the tag type, then a
NAME-VAR Tag would be created.

Part of the problem here on the non-programming side is that if you're
entering an event and you happen to be adding a person (as a principal
or as a witness), there's a real likelihood that you have only one name
for that person, the name in the source. As you add that person, you're
making that name the primary name.
Now if you later come upon that person (assuming it's verified the same
person), you might need to add one or more additional names, and at this
time you might wish to change the primary name.
This can cause a problem in that event where you originally entered the
person, if you left the default setting of "Primary name" but you want
the original name there. Seems to me a good idea to get into the habit
of selecting a specific name for specific events (although some types of
events should stay with the primary name, e.g. birth).
In the case I've assumed to start this, I don't see any value to
entering a new name from the tag entry/witness entry screen. The person
you're entering will have the only name you know.
On the other hand, if you're entering a person in an event who is
already in your database, and this event has a new name for this person,
I can see the value in that instance.
Again, my comments here do not consider at all the programming issues,
only the practical usage issues.
From a programming POV: Could a button be made which will work much
like the present New Person button? From within the present entry form,
enter an existing person, then a button appears for Add a New Name,
which opens a new data entry form (a Name-Var tag form?).
This would avoid the need to a) Close the event/witness forms, b) Open
the Name-Var form and make the entry, c) Reopen and complete the
event/witness entry. (What I now understand from y'all to be Delia's wish.)
