First of let me clarify that I use the reference field to show the
relationship to me, both blood line wise and non blood wise. This involves
a complex numbering system that is a takeoff from the Ahnentafel numbering.
I've detailed that numbering system before, so I won't repeat that here.
But, appended to the number I have a period and one of the following: A or B
or C, etc. (to signify first, second, or ? spouse), ADO (adopted), STE (step
child), PAR (partner), CLS (common law spouse), SSM (same sex marriage), TRA
(transsexual), SEX (sex changed), and a few others.
This allows me to select the reference field on the box charts to show
additional info. On top of that I use a notation style for naming so I can
put a notation such as (baby), (toddler), (child), (teen), for when in their
life they died; (marriage name) for those people I have no surname but have
a marriage recorded so to help set an instant recognition of status on the
picklist, etc.
I use the accent feature to have those blood related individuals highlighted
on the box charts. Each individual has to have a blood line flag set to Y
in the PV for that. This allows me to see at a glance those instances where
blood line individuals are married (and absence of the highlighting show I
have no idea if they are related blood line wise). By the way I use the
accent feature to highlight the adopted children. If they are adopted
within the bloodline they just show the bloodline color.
Now if I have a box chart where different lines are intermarried I have
somewhat of chance of knowing that at a glance since the vcf box charts have
some limitations of placement of boxes.
Complex, I know, but it helps me. There are some pitfalls in my system so I
adapt it as I see problems.

John:
Can you amplify the below -- i.e., Reference field for step-children and
accent feature to do the marrying cousin differentiation?
Thanks.
Judith
