You might try using [:NB:] in place of the space. So:

Mary[:NB:]Ann

If you do that, I think [PF] will produce "Mary Ann". I am not sure if the
picklist will show the code or not, and there may be places where the code
isn't interpreted where you might like it to be. Experiment before you
commit to this method.
