I think that description is accurate, but perhaps misleading. Using the
standard name tag technique does not alter where variations of a surname
appear in the PE or anywhere else; it has no effect on the name tags you add
for Van Dusen, Van Deusen, Vandeusen, Van Deursen, etc. Instead, the
standard name technique ensures that everyone with one of the variations
also has a name tag with the your preferred alternative and thus you can
search by the preferred variation and ignore variant spellings. The tags
that use your preferred variation _will_ appear together in the index, but
that's slightly different than how I interpreted your description above.
The downside to this approach is the requirement to maintain the extra name
tags, but TMGU includes the "Add Standard Name" feature to help with that.
