Blake,
As someone who manages a different list, I can say that the likely
problem is somehow you (or Google) have changed your email program to
send messages as formatted text, not plain text. 6k as plain text is a
good solid printed page. Make the message formatted, and it is possible
that the overhead to the message could kick it over the limit before you
even add any real content, a lot depends on what formatting has been
applied.
