Virginia,
I don't see "daily or weekly..." when I click forum options. However, I
think you're missing the point that I brought up several times in the forum
that a couple others echoed. The forum does not have a "push" option as one
of them said and which I termed as "RSS." Approx a year ago, someone who
manages the wholly genes forum said that he thought it would be possible to
add RSS to the forum, then nothing happened. If the forum added RSS, then I
could subscribe once and all messages go out to me... which as the other
poster termed as "push." As it stands now (unless I'm mistaken), the forum
can send out a notification when a new "topic" is started (a new message
thread). If I click in and subscribe to the message thread, then subsequent
posts will "push out" to me. That is different from RSS and how the
Rootsweb list works. RSS and the Rootsweb lists "push out" all messages,
always, without any action other than subscribing.
If the Wholly Genes forum activated or enabled a "push out" function (RSS or
similar) it would be far easier to use, follow, and contribute to. Because
it does not, I don't bother with it (most of the time) as in... it's not
user friendly - requires too much action on the user part - once you're used
to forums or lists that can "push out" the messages. Sorry, but I'm
terming "not-user-friendly" the action to have to subscribe to each message
to see all follow-up posts to the original message. I know there are
methods other use to overcome this - as in keep the forum open all the time
- but sorry, as someone else said, if you make it "push out" the messages
(with a reply function - important), then it's more user-friendly, and
easier to participate in.
Thanks for taking an interest. Refer to:
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/tmg/2010-10/1286766749 where
Glenn Gilbert said, "It isn't implemented on the WG Forum, but a little
research indicates it could be."
