Hi,

Since Census images became available on-line, I've downloaded each image
I've used. To date these have been mainly UK, and I use an abbreviated form
of the full reference as a file name - e.g. RG12_3456_789_AB.jpg for class
RG12, piece 3456, folio 789, page AB.

The only paper I've kept to date have been letters and copies of BMD
certificates obtained from the Government. I do intend to scan the letters,
but the earlier certificates are not A4 or Letter sized and so do not fit on
my scanner. I also have my note book from which I keep aiming to extract
the useful data - but never get around to it.

Subject: [TMG] Question of retention

Hi All,

I know we have discussed the retention of records but I was hoping to find
out what people are retaining. Now that I am retired and finally have some
time, I am finally trying to enter the 2 feet high pile of papers I have
amassed over the past few years. Years ago, I set up a filing system
including Surname binders divided into sections for census documents, birth
documents, e-mails, etc. At the same time, I had a filing system keeping
copies or documents, trees from other people, letters, etc. Now I am trying
to decide if I should revamp the system BEFORE I enter new data or just
start entering and clean up the files as I go along.

My main question now is what to do with the copies of the census records I
found online. Often they are not good copies and since they are online,
should I be keeping copies in my own papers too.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Helen Nash May
