Virginia:
Besides unfamiliarity with the program, and specifics of the user's
setup, there is also the set of problems that can arise during the
backup and/or restore process. In simplistic terms, what TMG calls
backing up and restoring "everything" is not always what the user thinks
of as "everything". Some things like preferences and parts of the
working environment may not be recreated as part of a restore.
For me, the big hiccup is my custom language. This happened in the
upgrade from V6 to V7, and has happened again. It isn't a b_g, although
I wish it worked more seamlessly; the process is well understood and
documented. One simply has to remember to do it. Instead of simply
restoring a custom language from a backup, one has to export it
(separate process from backup) and import it (ditto). V8 complicated
matters by changing an obscure but key program behavior in the custom
language area. No, *NOT* a virtual insect; but confusing and
disconcerting at first, definitely.
Terry's Tips has an excellent article on updating from V5 or V6 to V7. I
believe he has removed it from the TMG Tips Table of Contents because it
needs to be updated for the V7 to V8 move, but the principles are still
applicable and language customization are "updated" the same way. I can
send you the link because the file is still there, or a copy (if Terry
says either is OK) -- but you would have to make your own additions, for
Windows 7 file locations, for example. Or Terry might finish the updated
version. Not that he doesn't have anything else to do....
