I still like the idea that it default P1 to the first role in the list, and
P2 to the second one (for at least the marriage tags). Then if you want
Groom and Principal or Groom and Bride, or Bride and Bride, you just sort
them in the list as the first and second roles. Then if you wanted
occasionally something different, it wouldn't be a big deal to change it.
That way everyone could have their cake.
But with TMG adding roles to the tags, I don't think new users will
automatically use Principal. I think Bride and Groom make far more sense to
a new user.

Yes, enter them as "Principal," not as "Bride" and "Groom." That's what most
new users would automatically do, so this change doesn't effect them at all.
Of course, that won't satisfy those who believe it's better to assign those

The disagreement is about whether TMG should allow one Principal to be
entered with the default Role of "Principal" while entering some other Role
for the other Principal. That used to not be allowed, which is why if you
entered one Spouse with the the Role of "Groom" the other would be assigned
the Role of "Bride." But many users objected to this restriction. For
example, they wanted to enter one spouse as "Second"
and leave the other as "Principal." Or use a mixture of "Principal" and
another Role in other Tag Types. So the change was made in v8 to allow that.
Those users see this change as making the entry of Marriage and other Tags
easier and more rational.

Suggestions have been made for a further change to allow the use of
"Principal" and another Role, while still providing a solution for those who
want the "Bride" and "Groom" Roles automatically assigned, but none has not
been implemented yet.
