ELIZABETH "Lizz" LESLIE DUNLAP, 82, of Oak Ridge died Thursday morning, March
15, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Dunlap was born Feb. 24, 1919, in Nashville. Her parents were Robert
Stone and Callie Kittrell Stone Winfrey.
Mrs. Dunlap was a longtime business owner in Oak Ridge. She first opened her
business in the Municipal Markets in what is now the downtown area, with
partner Bob Williams. She then moved the business to Grove Center and finally
relocated and formed Lizz's Shopping Center, located at the corner of Oak
Ridge Turnpike and Raccoon Road.
Mrs. Dunlap was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and she was a
longtime member of Altrusa of Oak Ridge. Her son described her as a
"workaholic" and said she loved dancing.
She was the widow of Joel S. Dunlap, who died in 1993.
Mrs. Dunlap is survived by her son, David Ramsey Dunlap of Oak Ridge; five
grandchildren, Denise Leslie Dunlap of Nashville, Joel L. Dunlap and his
wife, Amy, of Coalfield, David R. Dunlap Jr. and Mattie Stanton, both of
Oliver Springs, and Kristie Duncan of Oak Ridge; six great-grandchildren,
Felicia Stanton, Josh Stanton, Carlene Dunlap and David Vincent Dunlap, all
of Oliver Springs, and Rachel Dunlap and Leah Dunlap, both of Coalfield; and
by Kathy Cunningham, whom she thought of as a daughter.
Glenda Dunlap of Oliver Springs is her former daughter-in-law.
In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Dunlap was preceded in death
by another son, Joel L. Dunlap, who died in 1960.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 19, in the chapel of
Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Craig M. Kallio officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the
Boys Club of Oak Ridge, P.O. Box 4021, Oak Ridge, TN 37831.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.
KATHERINE BLANKENSHIP, 76, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at her home in
Melbourne, Fla.
Mrs. Blankenship, who was born in Pikeville, had lived in Oak Ridge and
worked at the Oak Ridge K-25 Site for 20 years before moving to Melbourne in
1966.
In Melbourne, she worked as an administrative secretary with Rockwell
International at the Kennedy Space Center until 1990, when she retired.
Mrs. Blankenship was a member of Melbourne Chapter No. 263 of the Order of
Eastern Star and a member of the DAVA.
She was the widow of William L. Blankenship.
She is survived by her daughter, Beverly S. Woods and her husband, David, of
Oak Ridge; her stepsons, David Blankenship and his wife, Phyllis, of Claxton
and James Blankenship and his wife, Sharon, of Clinton; and her grandson,
Walt Blankenship of Clinton.
Mrs. Blankenship is also survived by Jill Frazier of Oak Ridge, whom she
considered a "second daughter;" her sisters-in-law, Helen Ault of Muldrow,
Okla., and Barbara Ault of Hendersonville; and her nephews, Grover Ault of
Hendersonville, Blair Ault of Indianapolis, Ind., and John Kinser of Muldrow.
The funeral was held Monday, March 5, at Florida Memorial Funeral Home in
Rockledge, Fla.
Burial followed at Florida Memorial Gardens
LAMAR "Bud" NESBITT RENTZ,71, of Clinton, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Rentz was born July 15, 1929, in Jonesboro, Ark., the son of George and
Bessie Cook Rentz, who are deceased. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the
Korean War.
He was a member of First Wesleyan Church in Clinton.
Mr. Rentz is survived by his wife, Eunice Webster Rentz; his daughters, Susan
Duncan Rentz of Clinton and Linda Adams and June Stampe, both of Texas; his
grandchildren, Byron, Jered, Sean and Kevin; and his great-grandchildren,
Kimberly, Trevor, Haden and Cory.
He is also survived by his brothers, H.F. Rentz of Elizabethtown, Ky., W.F.
Rentz of Ellensburg, Wash., and C.A. Rentz of Washington, D.C.; his
sisters-in-law, Jean Webster and Madeline Johnson, both of Clinton, and
Thelma Stowe and her husband, Dan, of Toccoa, Ga.; his brothers-in-law, Roy
Webster and his wife, Gladys, of Oak Ridge and Bill Webster and his wife,
Nellie, of Brownsburg, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three other brothers,
Jim Rentz, George Rentz and E.C. Rentz.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at First Wesleyan
Church, 821 Fowler St., Clinton. The Rev. Samuel Condon and the Rev. Troy
Keaton will officiate.
Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton. Members of the East
Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military rites.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, March 16, at
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
WALTER SYLVESTER WILCOX of Powell died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Wilcox is survived by his wife of 42 years, Betty J. Wilcox; his sons,
Cleophas Wilcox and Reginald Wilcox Sr. and his wife, Mary; his brothers,
Joseph Wilcox, David Wilcox and Issac Wilcox and his wife, Frances, all of
Terre Haute, Ind., and James Wilcox of Detroit, Mich.; his sisters, Ella Mae
Owens and Hershella of Terre Haute and Cynthia Neal and her husband, Willie,
of Visalia, Calif.; and by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at Lomax Temple, AME
Zion Church, 3220 Sherman Street, Knoxville, with the Rev. John Jackson
officiating.
Burial will be at Haven's Chapel Cemetery in Claxton.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 tonight, March 16, at
Jarnigan & Son Mortuary, Knoxville.
PAUL DEWEY ROGERS, 77, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at his
home.
He was born Aug. 17, 1923, in Knoxville, the son of John Tilford Rogers and
Minnie Belle Hensley Rogers, both now deceased.
Mr. Rogers retired from Dean Stallings Ford, where he worked as a mechanic.
After retirement, he went to work in the bakery of Food City and worked there
until his health began to fail.
He was an active member of Heritage Fellowship and served as the bus driver
for the youth choir. He also very much enjoyed cooking, his family said.
Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife, Lucille Kathryn Snyder Rogers. The couple
would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in July.
Also surviving are his son, Gary Paul Rogers of Knoxville; his daughter, Judy
Rogers Steadman and her husband, Chick, of Peachtree City, Ga.; his brothers,
Bob Rogers of Knoxville and Roy Rogers of Nashville; his sisters, Lois
Johnson of Knoxville and Helen Babb of Fayetteville, Ga.; and his
granddaughter, Melissa Robinson of Newnan, Ga.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by another sister, Grace
Parks, and three other brothers, Ralph Rogers, Earl Rogers and Drexel Rogers.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, March 16, at Heritage Fellowship. The
Rev. James C. Bandy, the Rev. Fred Garmon and the Rev. Ed Denham will
officiate.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at Oak
Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Heritage Fellowship.
Weatherford Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
WILLARD K. BURRESS, 85, of Clinton, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at the
home of his daughter in Nashport, Ohio.
Mr. Burress was born Aug. 12, 1915, in Campbell County, the son of Skip and
Martha Patterson Burress.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in Normandy, the
Rhineland and Central Europe. Mr. Burress received a Purple Heart and the
Bronze Star.
He was retired from General Motors in Cleveland, Ohio, where he had worked as
a machinist for more than 21 years.
Mr. Burress was a member of South Clinton Baptist Church.
His wife, Daisy Duncan Burress, died Nov. 5, 2000.
He is survived by his daughters, Sandra Burress Foust of Fairview Park, Ohio,
and Pamela Sue Burress of Nashport; his grandson, E. Gordon Foust II and his
wife, Virginia, of Brunswick, Ohio; his great-grandsons, E. Gordon Foust III,
Gannon James Foust and Guy Alexander Foust; and his brother-in-law, Mikey
Duncan of Clinton.
In addition to his wife and his parents, Mr. Burress was preceded in death by
two sisters and a brother, Reba Burress Lowe, Helen Burress Zanolini and Carl
Burress.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, March 16, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Dan Shultz officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at
Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
