DOROTHY LORAINE "Miss Rudy" HULING, 83, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, July 8,
2002, at her home.
She was born Dec. 31, 1918, in Knoxville, the daughter of James David McGill
and Grace Johnson McGill.
In earlier years, Mrs. Huling and her husband, James Rudolph Huling, owned
and operated Rudy's Market in Oak Ridge, with one location in the Scarboro
neighborhood and another location on Jefferson Avenue. Her husband died July
16, 1968.
Mrs. Huling was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sons, Howard R. Huling and his wife, Elaine M. Huling,
of Oak Ridge, and Roy L. Huling and his wife, Barbara J. Huling, of Kingston;
her daughter, Vivian L. Hall of Nashville; two brothers, Donald McGill and
Charles McGill; and by 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
Betty Hubbard of Oak Ridge was considered a special friend.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Huling was preceded in death by her
son-in-law, Jack H. Hall.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Calvary Baptist
Church with the Rev. Steve McDonald and the Rev. Howard R. Huling
officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 11, at Woodlawn
Cemetery in Knoxville. Pallbearers will be Jack Hall Jr., Rudy Huling Jr.,
Rick England, J.D. Colley, David Huling, Roy Huling Jr. and Larry Hall.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to Calvary
Baptist Church, 163 N. Jefferson Circle, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Weatherford Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
CLARA LANE COX, 74, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Born Feb. 14, 1928, in Clinton, she was the daughter of Millard and Lillie
Cline Lane.
Mrs. Cox was a member of Farmers Grove Baptist Church in Clinton. Her family
said she loved quilting in her spare time.
She was the widow of Carl Cox.
Mrs. Cox is survived by her daughter, Betty Aslinger and her husband, J.C.,
of Bellevue, Ohio; her grandson, James Aslinger of Bellevue; two sisters,
Rachel Thomas of Tazewell and Joyce Lane of Clinton; her sister-in-law, Annie
Lane of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews.
Phil and Brenda of Oak Ridge were considered special friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by a
grandson, Steve Aslinger; and three brothers and three sisters, Arvil Lane,
Albert Lane, Floyd Lane, Cindy Portwood, Pauline Rhea and Dolly Ray.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 11, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Moss Beets officiating.
Burial will follow at Farmers Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the
funeral home.
The Rev. PETE MELXONI Sr., 82, of Clinton, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at his
home.
He was born March 12, 1920, in Ages, Ky., the son of John and Martha Cadwick
Melzoni.
Rev. Melzoni had served as pastor of several churches during his ministry,
including Jones Creek Church in Verda, Ky., Poplar Creek Baptist Church in
Clinton and First Baptist Church of South Lebanon, Ohio. He was a member of
Moran Baptist Church in Clinton.
He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a recipient
of the Naval Cross.
In earlier years, Rev. Melzoni had worked as a coal miner in High Splint, Ky.
He is survived by his son, Pete Melzoni II and his wife, Sandra, of Wabash,
Ind.; two daughters, Phyllis Maples and her husband, Merle, of Wabash, and
Brenda Hatton of Clinton; his sister, Mary Iverson and her husband, Ira, of
Pompano Beach, Fla.; his brother, the Rev. Bill Melzoni and his wife, Rachel,
of Harlan, Ky.; two sisters-in-law, Oza Melzoni of Pennington Gap, Va., and
Tressie Melzoni of Dayton, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Rev. Melzoni was preceded in death by his wife,
Elizabeth "Betty" Melzoni; a daughter, Jacqulyn Melzoni; a son, John Melzoni;
a great-grandson, Mitch Maples; a son-in-law, David Hatton; and four sisters
and three brothers, Louella Smith, Paralee Jackson, Mildred Melzoni, Ethel
Kerkendall, Eugene Burress, Lawrence Melzoni and the Rev. Tommy Melzoni Sr.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Kenneth Seeber, the Rev.
Bill Dawson and the Rev. Kenny Sharp officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, at
Anderson Memorial Gardens, 640 Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton. His grandsons
will serve as pallbearers.
The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Melzoni
Foundation, c/o Clear Creek Baptist Seminary, Pineville, KY 40977.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral
home.
TONJA MARIE PIPER, 24, of Clinton, formerly of Oliver Springs, died Sunday,
July 7, 2002, at her home.
She was born Jan. 13, 1978, in Avon Park, Fla., and had lived in this area
since 1987.
Ms. Piper had worked as a convenient store clerk.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She is survived by her mother, Loretta Russell Windham of Oak Ridge; her
brother, Fred Windham and his wife, Linda, of Oliver Springs; her
grandfather, Lloyd Russell of Oliver Springs; and two nieces and a nephew,
Skyler Windham, Tyler Windham and Craig McCulloch.
Cliff Helton of Oak Ridge was Ms. Piper's companion. She had a "beloved pet"
named Buster.
She was preceded in death by her father, Vestle Dean Piper; and her maternal
grandmother, Freda Russell.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, July 9, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral
Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Russell Massengill officiating.
A graveside service will be held at Indian Creek Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
LOIS LEE SMITH of Chattanooga died Friday, July 5, 2002, at a Chattanooga
hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Raymond Goins of Chattanooga; three
daughters, Mona Lee Smith of Chattanooga, Lillie Jean O'Rear of Ringgold,
Ga., and Margarett Satterwhite of Soddy-Daisy; and by 12 grandchildren and 25
great-grandchildren, many in the local area.
The funeral was held Sunday, July 7, in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home
in Chattanooga with the Rev. David Johnson officiating.
Burial followed at Beason Cemetery in Chattanooga.
ETHELYN TOWNER SNELL of Kingston and formerly of Oak Ridge, died Friday, June
28, 2002, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville. She was 90
years old.
Mrs. Snell was born April 17, 1912, in Topeka, Kan. She grew up in Daytona
Beach, Fla., where she graduated in 1929 from Mainland High School.
After high school, she entered the Greenville Woman's College of Greenville,
S.C. (Furman University), where she served as official secretary to the
college.
While president of the freshman class, she was voted the most promising
freshman on campus, and was elected president of the Woman's College Student
Government Association for the 1934-1935 session. In addition to that honor,
she was a member of Pi Gamma Mu national honorary fraternity, the Prelude,
and the Education Club.
Mrs. Snell was co-editor of the student publication, The Hornet; a member of
the UWA Council; the Baptist Student Union Council; secretary to the student
council; and a member of the varsity basketball team.
Her senior year, she was one of the 10 students at Furman and Greenville
Woman's College to be named in the then newly established national collegiate
volume, "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities." Her
family said she had an outstanding scholastic record and graduated with
highest honors in 1935.
She received her master's degree at Yale University and took additional
graduate work at the University of Chicago.
She was the widow of Dr. Arthur H. Snell, a physicist and one of the top
scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project.
Mrs. Snell lived exactly 40 years of her adult life in Kingston. She was
active in the River Bend Garden Club, the Oak Ridge Woman's Club, the League
of Women Voters and Friends of the Library. Reading was her favorite pastime
until her health began to decline.
Additionally, she enjoyed writing and reciting poetry, her family said. She
was known as a gentle, kind woman with a deep love and appreciation for
nature. Her family said that artifacts, no matter how humble, never escaped
her keen eye. She also had a gift for articulating the English language.
Prior to moving to Kingston, she had lived on Orchard Lane and was a member
of the Oak Ridge Unitarian-Universalist Church and active in the church's
Women's Alliance. Mrs. Snell was known for her efforts in supporting the
annual fall craft show of the alliance, and she was instrumental in
organizing the League of Women Voters, serving as its first president.
She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Bowman of Oak Ridge, with whom she
lived for the past three and one-half years; her grandsons, Alex Patton of
Kingston and Brent Bowman of Oak Ridge; her granddaughter, Lori Sebae of
Knoxville; her sister, Nell Towner Killom of Gainesville, Fla.; and her
niece, Lesley D. Hunt of Walnut Creek, Calif.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Arthur T.
Snell of Kingston; her parents, John P. and Prudence Towner; her brothers,
Bob Towner and Bill Towner of Florida; and her sister-in-law, Dora S.
Davidson of Oak Ridge.
A combined memorial service for Mrs. Snell and for Mrs. Davidson will be held
at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 28, at the Oak Ridge Unitarian-Universalist Church,
1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to a
charity of the donor's choice.
