RUBIE MAE IVY, 74, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at her home.
She was born March 18, 1928, in Houston, Miss., the daughter of Lonnie Young
and Georgeanna Luster Young, who are deceased.
She and her husband, Charlie S. Ivy Sr., who survives, were married in
Chickasaw County, Miss., on Feb. 7, 1944. To this union seven children were
born.
Mrs. Ivy moved with her husband and family to Oak Ridge in 1948. Soon after,
she became a member of the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the
pastorate of the late Rev. C.C. Fuller.
Her family said she was consecrated a "church mother" under the pastorate of
the Rev. D.J. Ward. She served as a member of the Missionary Society, the
C.C. Fuller Circle and the Monday Evening Study Session.
Mrs. Ivy served the community as a member of the Atomic Chapter No. 13 of the
Order of the Eastern Star and the Guiding Light Circle. In her spare time,
she enjoyed gardening, fishing, canning and spending time with her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband of 58 years, she is survived by three sons,
Charlie S. Ivy Jr. and his wife, Cherry, and Douglas Ivy, all of Oak Ridge,
and Larry Ivy and his wife, Marie, of Clinton; two daughters, Wanda Sue Jones
and Marie "Poolie" Ivy, both of Oak Ridge; and two sisters, Martha Garner and
her husband, Jessie, of Oak Ridge and Mae Lee Harrell and her husband, Rubel,
of Halls.
Mrs. Ivy is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Emma Lee Young of Rock
Island, Ill., Robbie Young and Willie Mae Young, both of Oak Ridge, Sara Jane
Young of Osceola, Ark., Augusta Booker of Aberdeen, Md., Nola Ivy and Lillie
Polk, both of Chicago, Ill., and Virgie Mae Ivy of Dallas, Texas; and by 12
grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and other
relatives.
Those considered special friends were Edith Remson and Parlee Mitchell, both
of Oak Ridge.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ivy was preceded in death by a daughter,
Ruby Lee Capers, and a son, Robert Ivy; by four brothers, Homer Young, J.W.
Young, Jimmie Lee Young Sr. and Lonnie Young; and also by a grandson, Charles
Ivy III.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Mount Zion
Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. T.L. Mims officiating.
The family asks that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Monday
Evening Study Session, c/o Ben Thomas, 195 Wilberforce Ave., Oak Ridge, TN
37830.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Weatherford Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
