Minutes of Washington County Court -- 1777
Washington County came into being on January 1, 1777. Printed
below are the minutes of the County Court for that year. They
were prepared for publication by Miss Pollyanna Creekmore. The
original spelling of words hag been retained.
Minutes of the County Court
January Twenty Eight in the first Year of the Commonwealth of
Virginia and in the Year of our Lord Christ 1777-Being the day
appointed by Act of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of
Virginia for holding the first Court for the County of
Washington at Black's Fort. A Commission of the Peace and
Dedimus for this Count). directed to Arthur Campbell, William
Campbell, Even Shelby. Daniel Smith, William Edmondson, John
Campbell, Joseph Martin, Alexander Buchanan, James Dysart, John
Kinkead, John Anderson, James Montgomery, John Coulter, John
Snody. George Blackburn, and Thomas Mastin Gentlemen, bearing
date the Twenty first day of December 1776 were produced and
read and thereupon pursuant to the Dedimus William Campbell &
Joseph Martin two of the aforenamed Justices Administered the
Oath of a Justice of the Peace and of a Justice of the County
Court in Chancery to Arthur Campbell the first Justice named in
said Commission and he afterwards administered the aforesaid
oaths to William Campbell, William Edmondson, John Camp bell,
Joseph Martin, John Kinkead, John Anderson, James Montgomery,
John Snody & George Blackburn.
James Dysart Gent. Produced a Commission from his Excellency
Patrick Henry Governour or Chief Magistrate of the Commonwealth
of Virginia bearing date the 21st day of December 1776
appointing him Sheriff of the County of Washington during
pleasure which was read and thereupon he together with George
Adams, Andrew Colvill, Joseph Black, Arthur Campbell & William
Edmondson his Securities entered into and acknowledged their
Bonds one in the Sum of five Hundred pounds, the other in the
Sum of one thousand pounds for the said James Dysart due and
faithful performance of his office which was ordered to be
recorded and then the said James Dysart took the Oath of
Sheriff of this County.
The Sheriff then opened the Court in the Name of the
Commonwealth of Virginia and the Court being thus constituted
they proceeded to the appointment of a Clerk as directed the
Constitution when David Campbell was appointed & took the Oath
Arthur Campbell produced his Excellency the Governour's
Commission appointing him County Lieutenant of the of
Washington and took the Oath of Office.
Dianah Jones in open Court complained that Edward did assault
and dangerously wound her Husband Than Jones and prayed
Security of said Bond far his appearing next Court and for his
good Behaviour in the meantime.
Edward Bond in Court acknowledged himself indebted to the
Commonwealth of Virginia in the Sum of four Hundred pounds &
Andrew Calvill, Richard Moore William Bond each in the Sum of
Two Hundred pounds of their respective Goods &,Chattles lands
and Tenements to be levied and unto the said Commonwealth
rendered yet upon this condition that the said Edward Bond
appear at the next Court to be held for this County and be of
good beheaviour in the meantime to all the good people of this
Commonwealth then this recognizance to be void. Else to remain
in full force & Virtue.
On motion of John Henderson Administration is granted him on
the Estate of Charles Carter Deceased whereupon he together
with Ephraim Dunlop his Security entered into and acknowledged
their Band in the Sum of one thousand pounds for his faithful
Administration of the said Decedents Estate.
Ordered that Robert Edmondson, David Carson & Robert Buchanan
appraise the Estate of Charles Carter Deceased and make return
to next Court.
On motion of Archibald Scott Administration is granted him on
the estate of Isaac Chrisman deceased whereupon he together
with John Kinkead, Abraham MeClelan, John Anderson and John
Snody his Securities entered into and acknowledged their Bond
in the Sum of One thousand pounds the faithful Administration
of the said Decedents Estate.
Ordered that John Kinkead Sen. Frederick Friley. James
Wharton, John Dunkin and Samuel Porter or any three of them
being first sworn appraise the Estate of Isaac Chrisman
Deceased and make return to next Court.
William Campbell Gent. produced his Excellency the Governours
Commission appointing him Lieutenant Colonel of the County of
Washington and took the Oath of Office.
The Court adjourned until tomorrow 8 o'clock.
