T.G. "Gordon" Godfrey Jr., 69, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003,
at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Born in Greenville, S.C., he was the son of T. Gordon and Elizabeth Young
Godfrey, later Mardre, both now deceased.
Mr. Godfrey attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and
later graduated from Clemson University with bachelor's and master's degrees in
1957 and 1959. He retired in 1997 after 38 years as a materials engineer at
both Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. After his wife's death in
1999, Mr. Godfrey became a volunteer at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge,
having developed a strong attachment to the people who had cared so well for
her, according to his family. He volunteered for nearly four years, and his
family said he was dedicated to being "at work" even when he was very ill. His
family said he befriended everyone he met there including patients, family
members, and staff, and derived intense joy from helping people when they needed
it most.
According to his family, Mr. Godfrey was a devoted husband, father and
grandfather, and he took pride in his grandchildren and enjoyed seeing his children
experience parenthood.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Godfrey was preceded in death by his wife,
Elaine Proctor Godfrey.
Mr. Godfrey is survived by three daughters, Gayle M. Godfrey of Oak Ridge,
Greta Godfrey Miller of Knoxville, and Gwyn Godfrey Snider and husband, Todd, of
North Augusta, S.C.; and by two grandchildren, Erich Thomas Miller of Oak
Ridge and Melanie Elaine Snider of North Augusta.
A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at Weatherford
Mortuary.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the
Hospitality House of Methodist Medical Center, c/o the Methodist Hospital
Foundation, 990 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830 or the American Lung
Association, 212 South Peters Road, Suite 106, Knoxville, TN 37923-5217.
The family will receive friends following the service until 8:30 p.m. at the
mortuary.
Clarence Pointer Sr., 64, of Andersonville, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Born Nov. 1, 1938, in Anderson County, he was the son of Willie and Rena
Bumgardner Pointer, both now deceased.
Mr. Pointer was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church and retired
from the Anderson County School System as a custodian.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Clarence
Pointer Jr., and by a brother, Ralph Carl Pointer.
Mr. Pointer is survived by his wife, Martha Jackson Pointer; three sons,
James Lee Pointer of Clinton, and Jesse Elbert Pointer and Harold Benjiman
Pointer, both of Andersonville; and by two daughters, Diane Lyons and husband,
Wesley, of Andersonville, and Stacy Lee Shepherd of Oak Ridge.
He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and by
three sisters, Willie Prosise of Claxton, Betty Jean Brooks of Oliver Springs
Highway, and Shirley Taylor of Clinton.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Harold Ellis and the Rev. Ray
Hill officiating.
Burial will follow at Liberty Baptist Church cemetery in Heiskell.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 12, at the
funeral home.
Norman C. Miller, 59, of Aldie, Va., formerly of Clinton, died Friday, Sept.
5, 2003, at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Virginia.
Born Feb. 25, 1944, in Bell County, Ky., he was the son of Teeta Miller of
Clinton and Glendon T. Miller, who is now deceased.
Mr. Miller was a member of Edgemoore Baptist Church and was retired from the
U.S. Government.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Shirley Carol
Miller; his son, Norman C. Miller Jr. of Winchester, Va.; two daughters,
Shawna D. Miller of Berryville, Va., and Melissa D. Howell of San Clemente, Calif.;
one grandchild; and by several aunts, uncles and extended several members.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at
Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton with the Rev. Clark Brown officiating.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to Hospice
of National Capital Region, 9300 Lee Highway, Fairfax, VA 22031-1207.
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of all local arrangements.
Alma Ruth Coleman, 72, of Clinton, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at NHC
HealthCare of Oak Ridge.
Born June 1, 1931, in Anderson County, she was the daughter of Edd and Edna
Smith Woods, of the Dutch Valley community, both now deceased.
She was a 40-year member of Midway Baptist Church in Clinton.
Mrs. Coleman is survived by her husband of 42 years, Joe Coleman; two
daughters, Jeanie Nowicki and husband, Greg, of Atlanta, Ga., and Debbie Christian
and husband, Darin, of Kingsport; a brother, Bill Woods of Grimsley; and by
three grandchildren, Evan Nowicki, Kate Nowicki and Heather Christian.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at Anderson
Memorial Gardens on Oliver Springs Highway with the Rev. Don Dunn officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
Kendall "Kenny" Ray Henry, 18, of Sunbright, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003.
Born Oct. 14, 1984, he was the son of Machelle Henry. He was a 2003 graduate
of Central High School and was employed by Kroger in Oak Ridge.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Kenneth Ray Henry, and by his
great-grandparents, Harvey and Ester Walker and Jess and Gretchel Henry.
In addition to his mother and her fiancé, Tim Sexton, Mr. Henry is survived
by his grandmother, Jo Ann Henry; two aunts, Janice Brown and family, Doug,
Devin and Drent, and Sandy Spurling and family, Richard, Justan and Michael; and
by several aunts, uncles and cousins.
His family said he was loved and will be missed by many friends including
Reneé Lopez Castaneda and Michael Rich, who are considered special.
The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at Schubert Funeral
Home in Sunbright with Charles Webb and the Rev. Lew Kizer officiating.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Sunbright
Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Clayton Lide, 80, longtime resident of Oliver Springs, formerly of South
Carolina, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at Briarcliff Health Care Center.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at Littleleaf
Baptist Church in Oliver Springs.
Burial will be Monday, Sept. 15, in Darlington, S.C.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Sharp
Funeral Home in Oliver Springs.
