LAWSON, MARGUERITE EILEEN FIERBAUGH - devoted wife of the late Joseph W.
"Uncle Joe" Lawson, died September 30, 2006, as a result of injuries
sustained in an automobile accident. She was born January 30, 1916. Joe and
Marguerite were married 68 years and had 8 children. "Mom Lawson", as she
was known to her six children, 15 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren,
was born in Henderson, West Virginia on January 30th, 1916. The most
important aspect of her life was her husband and her children, but she was a
"mother" in many ways to hundreds of children in the United States and to
those she touched in Africa, Iran, Egypt, Japan and England. Marguerite
traveled for several years with her husband representing the wives of Lions
International, which Uncle Joe served in many capacities, including
International Director. In her speech on Happiness presented to the
Lionesses of Mansfield, Ohio, she said, "First, I would say, give yourself
away. Be sincere. Be generous with praise, be observing to those about you,
be sensitive to the feelings of others, be yourself. Like people as they are
rather than who they are and what they have. Every time you talk with a son
or daughter away from home, never end the conversation without saying, I
love you." For her efforts and devotion to Lions International, Marguerite
was named a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest honor conferred by the Lions
Club International Foundation. Marguerite touched the lives of many people,
and her writings and journals demonstrate her love of and devotion to all of
humanity. She demonstrated her spiritual understanding of a loving and
caring God through her innate goodness, and by her donation of time, food,
support, and kindness to many friends and organizations in Bristol and
throughout the United States. In further expression of this commitment, she
and Uncle Joe founded Lawson-Fierbaugh Foundation, which has contributed to
the lives of many. Marguerite wrote to her father in 1970: "I'm grateful to
know the joy of belonging to a big family, to know the love of brothers and
sisters. I'm grateful for the memory of you and Mama, in watching a deep
love expressed through the years." Her siblings include: Wilbert Fierbaugh,
Wilma M. Wiggins, Floris A. Worley, Leota V. Spain, George R. Fierbaugh,
Emma Louise Fierbaugh, Sarah Frances Comer, Nellie D. Howell, Ruth E. Smith,
Harry W. Fierbaugh, Charles A. Fierbaugh. She is survived by three sisters
and one brother. For the past several years Marguerite was cared for by
skilled, loving, and devoted caregivers and physicians. The following men
and women devoted many hours to Mom Lawson's emotional, physical and
spiritual well-being: Chrystal Akers, Judy Fern, Barbara Fowler, Sandy,
Hollyfield, Lois Lambert, Jenny Lawson, Matthew Lawson, Maxwell Lawson,
Brenda Malone, Jill Sanabria, Dennis Meade, Tony Montoya, Jill Mullins,
Tracie Muniz, Sue Perry, Mary Russ, Lisa St. Clair, Gloria Tester, Donna
Wolfe, Dr. Joseph Armstrong, Dr. Jackie Burt, Dr. Travis Burt, Dr. William
D. Heizer, Dr. Janet Rice, Dr. William Schermer, Dr. David Thompson, Dr.
Douglas Williams. The family also thanks Dr. Nelson Gwaltney, Dr. Jim
Brasfield, and Bristol Regional Medical Center Staff who provided care and
counsel during Marguerite's last admission. Marguerite is survived by her
children Joseph W. Lawson II, and his wife Patricia of Bristol, Vir-ginia;
Linda Lawson Heizer and her husband Dr. William David Heizer, of Chapel
Hill, North Carolina, Sara S. Lawson Matt and her husband Frank of Wrentham,
Massachusetts, Attorney Philip J. Lawson and his wife Neville of Knoxville,
Tennessee, Larry F. Lawson of Blountville, Tennessee and Attorney Mark M.
Lawson and his wife Joyce of Bristol, Virginia. Two of Marguerite's
children, twins David Thomas Lawson and Frances Elizabeth Lawson, were born
January 16, 1954, but died January 21, 1954. Among quotes collected by Mom
Lawson is this from Sophocles: "Children are the anchors that hold a mother
to life." On Thursday, October 5, the family will receive friends at State
Street United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow in
the sanctuary at 3:00 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted immediately
following the funeral at Mountain View Cemetery on Valley Drive. Pallbearers
