Vola M. Barnes, age 84, of LaFollette, passed away Oct. 4 at St. Mary's
Medical Center of Campbell County after a long illness. She was a loving mother and
grandmother. She was a member of Big Creek Gap Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. W.B. and Mossie Honeycutt
Miller; brother; Charles Miller; sister Geraldine Arnett. She is survived by her
husband of 61 years, Elery (Dude) Barnes of LaFollette; daughter and son in
law, Susan and W.L. Grimes of Caryville; sons and daughter in law, Elery Barnes
of Spring Arbor, MI, Todd and wife, Janet Barnes of East Aurora, NY;
grandchildren, Zack Turner, Jeremy, Christopher, Benjamin, Nicole, Stephen, Nathan and
Sarah Barnes, Ryan, Bailey and Joel Sanek; five great-grandchildren; brothers,
James Clyde Miller of Spring City, Kyle Mille of Monroe, MI; sister, Etta
Johnson of Tazewell, Donna Lynch of Thorn Hill; several nieces, nephews and a host
of friends. Funeral services were held Oct. 6 in the Cross Chapel with the
Rev. Carlo Bruce officiating. Interment was in the Leach Cemetery. Cross Funeral

Gregory Joel Burress, age 40, of Huntsville, went home to be with the Lord,
Oct. 4 at Scott County Hospital. He was a member of Nicks Creek Missionary
Baptist Church. He loved to read and talk to his friends. He was preceded in death
by his daddy, Clifford Burress; grandparents, Roy and Bessie Burress, Virgil
and Tillie Burress. He is survived by his mother, JoAnn Burress; brother and
special sister in law, Danny and Gini Burress, all of Huntsville; nieces,
Shanion and husband, Marcus Lowe, Beth Burress, Sabrina Burress; special great
niece, Shaylah Bowlin. Funeral services were held Oct. 7 at Nicks Creek Baptist
Church with Rev. Ronnie Lowe, Rev. Demus Lowe and Rev. Keith Massengale
officiating. Interment was in the Nicks Creek Cemetery. Cross Funeral Home was in
charge of the arrangements.
Robert"Bobby"Carter, age 56 of Jacksboro passed away Oct. 6 at U.T. Medical
Center of Knoxville. He was a member of Demory Baptist Church. He was self
employed as a painter and carpenter. He enjoyed his work and loved his family very
much. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Willard and Edna Mae
Massengill Carter; father and mother in law, Burgin and Wilma Morton Allen.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Carter of Jacksboro; daughter and son in
law, Tanya and Michael Walden of Jacksboro; grandchildren, Dayne and Dylan
Walden of Jacksboro; brothers and sisters in law, Ronnie and Lyn Carter and Roger
and Cindy Carter, all of Clinton; sisters, Judy Stokes of Knoxville and Mary
Carter of Winter Haven, Fla; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and
friends. Funeral services were held Oct. 8 in the Martin Wilson Chapel with the
Rev. Roger Carter officiating. Interment was in the Pond Cemetery. Martin
Wilson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Hildred Irene Buck Cooper, age 97 of Fairview, KY passed away Sept. 30 at
Beech Tree Manor in Jellico. She was born to Frank and Mollie Buhl Buck on June
20,1909 at Halls Crossroads. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. She
worked for several years as a cook at Boston School. Her mother died when she
was only 17 years old and with her father working away from home, she, with a
little help of her next youngest sister who was only 13, took over the
responsibility of raising her younger brothers and sisters. She married John Cooper on
Jan. 20, 1940 to whom she was very devoted and after having 59 wonderful
years together, he passed away Feb. 27, 1999. She was also preceded in death by
her brothers, John, James, Boyd, Leonard and Oran Buck; sisters, Martha Lawson,
Dossie Booher, Lucy Douglas, Juanita (Billie) Hunter.
She leaves several nieces and nephews and a very special daughter, Barbara
Jean Benvento who lived with her and her husband, John, from about the age of
three until she graduated from high school; sister, Cleda Noff of Wadsworth, OH.
Funeral services were held Oct. 4 at the Cox and Son Chapel with the Rev.
Horace Partin officiating. Interment was in the Lot Cemetery. Cox and Son Funeral
Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Emma Jane Cummins, age 73 of Jellico went to be with the Lord on Sept. 30.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C.Cummins. She is survived by her
daughters, Rosa Lee and husband Ronnie Dotson of Sunbright, Donna Cummins of
Jellico; son, James C. Cummins Jr. and wife Penny of Jellico; sister, Beulah
Smith of Cleveland; brother; E. J. Smith and wife Bessie of Jellico;
grandchildren, Barry Dotson of Williamsburg, KY, Virginia Bolton of Oneida, Erin Walker,
Beth Cummins, Carrie Cummins of Jellico; five great grandchildren; special
nieces and nephew; Polly Bauter, Betty Jane Chitwood and Steve Zecchini. Private
services were held Oct. 2 in the Douglas Cemetery with the Rev. Dave Wright
and Rev. Ray Landes officiating. Llewellyn Funeral Home was in charge of the
arrangements.
Alma L. Graham, age 94 of Jellico passed away Oct. 6 at Fort Sanders Hospital
in Knoxville. She was preceded in death by her husband, George William
Graham; great grandson, Marcus Payne. She is survived by her daughter, Anna Laura
Payne and husband, Ernest Payne of Clinton; son, Bob Graham of Covington, KY;
sister, Darlene and husband, Orson Lamb of Cincinatti, OH; brother, John Cecil
Smith of Jellico; grandchildren, Mark Payne and wife, Martha of Clinton, Steve
Payne of Oak Ridge, Barbara Graham of Covington, KY; great grandchildren,
Brandon Payne and wife, Gretchen of Clinton, Casey Payne of Clinton, Cody Payne of
Knoxville; a host of friends. Funeral services were held Oct. 8 at the
Llewellyn Funeral Home. Graveside services were held in the Jellico Cemetery with
the Rev. Willie Partin officiating. Llewellyn Funeral Home was in charge of the

Loraine White Haines, age 78 of Gainesville, FL, formerly of Clovis, New
Mexico
passed away Oct. 1 at Shands, University of Florida, and Gainesville. She was
born in LaFollette on June 22, 1928 to Robie White and Estelle McNeeley. She
married Frank Haines, who predeceased her in 1990. She was an extremely active
member of Wesley United Methodist Church here in Gainesville, and Kingwood
United Methodist Church in Clovis, New Mexico. She was a past member of the
Kappa Delta Iota, Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Delta Kappa, and a lifetime member of the
National Education Association. She is survived by her son, Robie Haines of
Robertsville, MO; sisters, Joanne McHenry, of Lexington, Ill and Carlene
Collins of Eatonton, GA Funeral services were held Oct. 5 at the Wesley United
Methodist Church in Gainesville. In lieu of Flowers Expressions of Sympathy may be
made to either Wesley United Methodist Church or Kingswood United Methodist
Church. Milam Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Bruce Allen Huckaby, age 38 of Lake City, passed away Oct. 2 at St. Mary's
Medical Center of Campbell County. He was a member of the Clear Branch Baptist
Church. Bruce was born April 25, 1968 in Knox County. He enjoyed fishing and
spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his mother,
Magdalen Akibe of Atlanta, GA; daughters, Breanna Gayle Huckaby, Bridget Allison
Huckaby, Brittany Graves, all of Knoxville; brothers, David Huckaby and wife,
Libby of Lake City, Mack Huckaby and wife, Bonnie of Atlanta, GA, Tim Huckaby and
wife, Joyce of Covington, KY; grandmother, Woodrow Foust of Lake City; several
nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services
were held Oct. 4 in the Hatmaker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Lane
officiating. Interment was in the Foust Cemetery.

Leon Huckaby, age 67 of LaFollette passed away Oct. 6 at the Summitt View
Nursing Home in Lake City. He was a member of West LaFollette Baptist Church. He
enjoyed car racing and all sports. He was an avid bird collector.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Polette and Ada Cantrell Huckaby;
brothers, Jerry Huckaby and Shirley Ray Huckaby; sister, Barbara Jean Lawson.
He is survived by his son and daughter in law, Gregory Leon and Marie Huckaby
of LaFollette; daughters and sons in law, Teresa and Marion Mefford and
Jemenda (Mendy) and Bob Moore all of LaFollette; daughter, Tonya Rose Bach of
Knoxville; grandchildren, Brian and Ashley Huckaby, Brett Starrett, Kelsie and
Matthew Moore; four great grandchildren; brothers, Hubert and Doyle Huckaby both
of Jacksboro; sisters, Phyllis Kennedy and Mary Katherine Lay both of

William Robert Kincaid, age 71 of LaFollette passed away suddenly Oct. 3. He
was born September 21, 1935 to John Boyd and Annette Kincaid. He was former
Executive Director of LaFollette Housing Authority, an avid fisherman, Member of
the Tennessee Striper Association, and Member and Deacon of First
Presbyterian Church.He was preceded in death by his son, John Boyd Kincaid II, and
father, John Boyd Kincaid. He is survived by his wife, Billie Ann Kincaid of
LaFollette; sons and daughters-in-law, William L. and Shawn Kincaid of LaFollette,
and Barry and Janet Kincaid of Lexington, SC; grandchildren, Brandi Kincaid, of
Powell, Abbi Kincaid, of Murfreesboro, Leah and Carsyn Kincaid, of Lexington,
SC; step-granddaughter, Lisa Belleman husband, Nick, of Knoxville;
step-grandson, Michael Allen and wife, Maggie, of Austin, TX; mother, Annette
Kincaid of LaFollette; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Barbara
Kincaid, of Smyrna, GA; sister, Ann Fairless and husband, Ken, of Conway, AR; nephew,
Ian Kincaid and wife, Laurie, of Murfreesboro; nieces, Jennifer Miles and

Doris Jean Mowell, age 71, of LaFollette passed away Oct. 5.She was preceed
in death by her parents, H.M. and Thressa Bowman Shelby. She is survived by her
husband, Verne Mowell; daughter, Denise Sheperd of Eaton, OH; grandsons,
Jason and Kenneth Brannon. No funeral services were planned. Cross Funeral Home
was in charge of the arrangements.
Curtis Lee Orick, age 53 of Caryville passed away Oct. 4 at the U.T. Medical
Center in Knoxville. He was a member of Indian Mound Baptist Church and a coal
miner for 28 years. He served on the city council for Caryville and was a
volunteer for the Caryville Fire Department. He loved his family very much and
enjoyed life to the fullest. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles
Orick; grandparents, Lawrence and Icie Orick and Marion and Hazel Goad; brother,
Charles Edward Orick Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Amy and Carrie Orick
both of LaFollette; mother, Shirley Orick of Caryville; special friend,
Valerie Phillips of Caryville; brothers and sisters in law, Rusty and Donna Orick
of Jacksboro and Michael and Jennifer Orick of Caryville; sisters and brothers
in law, Debbie and Bill Wilson of Jacksboro, Sandy and Steve Perkins of
LaFollette, Sheila and Jimmy Rutherford of Jacksboro, Cindy and Jeff Wright of
Jacksboro, Peggy Elkins of Jacksboro and Charlotte Foster of LaFollette; mother of
his children, Linda Orick; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a host
of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Oct. 6 in the Martin
Wilson Chapel with the Rev. Charles Wilson and Rev. Edmon Love officiating.
Interment was in the Campbell Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family
asks that all donations be made to the funeral home for burial expenses. Martin

Rev. Hudon Overbay, age 82 of LaFollette passed away Oct. 3 at Summitt View
Nursing Home in Lake City. He was a pastor and minister at Pleasant Ridge
Baptist Church for 30 years. He had a radio ministry for 50 years. He enjoyed
reading his bible and going to church. He was preceded in death by his wife, June
Overbay; parents, Tom and Julie Lindsay Overbay; brother, Delbert Overbay;
sister, Cleo Lake. He is survived by his sons and daughters in law, Don and Nancy
Overbay of Powell, , Lonnie and Debbie Overbay of Jacksboro; grandchildren,
Toby, Christopher and Jeff Overbay and Beth Fraker.; great grandchildren,
Brooklyn, Caleb and Caden Fraker and Haley and Gabby Overbay; sister, Fontella
Overbay; aunt and uncle who raised him, Hugh and Bertha Lindsay; several nieces,
nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held
Oct. 5 in the Martin Wilson Chapel with the Rev. Charles Sparks officiating.
Interment was in the Bakers Forge Cemetery.

Sophia Chumley Pharris of Windland Towers, Nashville, formerly of Harrogate
died Oct. 2. She was a native of Claiborne County. She was the daughter of the
late Mr. and Mrs. William Patterson Chumley. She was a charter member of the
First Baptist Church of Harrogate, past worthy Matron of the Eastern Star and
Mother Advisor to the Rainbow Girls. She was a member of New Tazewell First
Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Freeman Pharris.
She is survived by her daughter, Omma Keys; granddaughters, Stacy Lee Keys
and Lisa Renee Keys; nieces, Lillian B. Harrell of Nashville and Lou Jean
Arrants of Kennesaw, GA. Funeral services were held Oct. 5 with the Rev. J.L. Shaw
officiating. Interment was in the Chumley Family Cemetery.

Michael Wayne Savage was born Sept. 5, 1966. He went to be with the Lord on
Oct. 2. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Lindsay Savage. He is

law, Kathey and Mark Pertuse; sister and brother in law, Vergie and Frank
Dixon, Jr.; sister, Lisa Nelson; sons, Michael Savage, Christopher and Daniel

Ethel Smith, age 89 of Jellico went to be with her Lord on Sept. 26 at the
Jellico Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard
Smith.
She is survived by her daughters, Phyllis and husband, Clarence (Gene) Beck
of Jellico, Veda and husband, Authur Hinkle of Corbin, Kentucky; KY, Brenda and
husband, Jimmy Branam of Corbin, KY; grandchildren, Sheri and husband, Bobby
Delk of Louisiana, Crystal and husband, Bronson Fugate of Corbin, KY, Beverly
Elliotte of Corbin, Preston and wife, Tina Lambdin of Jellico;
great-grandchildren, Loren and husband Matthew Huff of LaFollette, Jeremy Elliotte of Corbin,

John Clint (Greasy) Surber, age 84 of Wooldridge passed away Sept. 20 at his
home. He served in the United States Army as a corporal during World War II
with over six years of overseas duty. He also loved playing baseball as a young
man and watching sports. He was an avid Kentucky Wildcat fan. He also had a
love for fishing especially with his friends. He was preceded in death by his
wife of 49 years, Lois Williams Surber; parents, Charlie and Lula Surber;
brothers, Robert (Bus) Surber, Theodore Surber and Joe Surber; sister, Lilly Evans;
several nieces and nephews. He is survived by his sister, Thelma Stokes of
Knoxville; brother, Jack and wife, Sue Surber of OH, R.C. and wife, Shirley
Surber of Jellico; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends, special
caregivers, Ruby Kirkland and Louise Powers. Funeral services were held Sept. 22 at the
Llewellyn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Morgan officiating.
Interment was in the Surber Family Cemetery with Military Honors by the Campbell
County Honor Guard. Llewellyn Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Spencer Ray Carl Vess, age 6 months of Knoxville, was taken by angels to
heaven on Oct. 4 at Children's Hospital in Knoxville. He was born April, 8, 2006
in Knoxville. "Little Man" will be dearly missed by his parents, and the rest
of his family members. He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Mary
Ellen Trentham and grandfather, Clyde Meeks Sr.He is survived by his parents,
David and Samantha Meeks Vess of Knoxville; sister, Destinee Vess of
Knoxville; grandparents, Shirley and Clyde Meeks of Knoxville, Carolyn Trentham of
Knoxville; great grandparents, Carl Trentham of Knoxville; Albert and Sarah
Clemmer of Knoxville, Martha Meeks of Knoxville; uncle, Matt Vess of Knoxville,
Susan and Tim Marsh of Knoxville; great uncles, Ron, Carl, Terry and Ples Trentham

Geneva Wylie, age 94 of Claiborne County passed away Oct. 1. She was born
Sept. 4, 1912 in Claiborne County. She was the daughter of the late Frank and
Minerva Baker Wylie. She was a member of Gap Creek Baptist Church and Claiborne
County Retired Teachers Association and was a librarian at Powell Valley High
School for many years. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ralph, Roger,
Park and Earl Wylie. Funeral services were held Oct. 3 at Reece Funeral Home
with the Rev. Clay Herrell officiating. Interment was in the Kibert Cemetery.

Nora E. "Tina" Yoakum, age 60 of Cumberland Gap passed away Oct. 2 at her
home. She was born July 31, 1946 in Middlesboro, KY. She was preceded in death by
her father, Herbert Powers; two infant brothers; grandson, Michael Yoakum.
She is survived by her husband, J.C. Yoakum, Sr. of Tiprell Road, Cumberland
Gap; mother, Mamie Helton Powers; son, J.C. "Pete" Yoakum, Jr. and wife, Vickie
of NC; daughters, Patty Alonzo of Ft. Wayne, IN, Joyce Yoakum of Cumberland
Gap; brothers, William, Roy and Hubert Powers of Middlesboro, KY; sisters, Rose
Martin of Pace, FL, Mary Thacker of Cumberland Gap; 12 grandchildren; one great
grandchild and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Randy Duncan officiating. Interment was in the Yoakum Cemetery. Reece Valley
