In mid 1800s and earlier, much of the travel in TN was on the Clinch,
Tennessee, Cumberland and other major rivers -- including the Powell which
traverses Claiborne Co TN

Although many are familiar with the Tennessee River, it flows from near
Knoxville to near Chattanooga -- into Alabama -- then turns North, returns to
TN and flow completely across the State of Tennessee. Lots of opportunity
for boatmen.
