OVERTON, MR. DOUGLAS - age 83, of Tazewell, loving husband of Logretta Morgan
Overton, was born June 3, 1922 and passed away peacefully Thursday, August
18, 2005 at his home in the company of his family. Born in Tazewell he was a son
of the late William A. and Patsy Thomas Overton. Mr. Overton entered active
military duty in 1942 serving as a Staff Sergeant in the 105th Engineer Combat
Battalion, the 30th infantry division, "The Old Hickory Division". He served
in four major campaigns from Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge. During this
time he was awarded the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Citation,
Silver Service Star, and the 2 Purple Hearts. After the war, Mr. Overton
served as a Rural Mail Carrier and was recognized by the United States Government
for serving honorably for 36 years without any sick leave. One of the most
profound loves of Mr. Overton was that of the Tazewell United Methodist Church.
Where he served in many positions from Chairman of the Board to usher for more
than 50 years. Doug was very civic minded and served on many boards and
committees. He served on the Powell Valley Electric Board where he enjoyed 20 years
of service. He was active on the Library Board and served as the City Recorder
for 19 years. Doug also had a love for the land, through this he avidly bred
horned Hereford cattle and actively served in the Tennessee Hereford
Association. He worked with the University of Tennessee to help raise standards for the
beef industry. He also served on a five county conservation board in efforts
to clean water and prevent soil erosion. In 2004 he was awarded the
Conservation Farm Award. Doug was a 50 year member of the Eastern Star Lodge, Shriners,
and the York Rite Masonic Bodies. Preceded in death by: parents: William and
Patsy (Thomas) Overton; brother: Charles "Buckshot" Overton; sister: Pat
Scholz; brothers-in-law: Earl Scholz, George Ketchersid. Survivors include: wife:
Lagretta Morgan Overton of Tazewell, TN; son: Wallace and wife Becky Overton of
Tazewell, TN; daughter: Dr. Rosalind and husband Dr. T.C. (Pete) Smith of
Greer, SC; grandchildren: Collier and Will D. Smith of Greer, SC, Jackson D. and
Morgan L. Overton of Lexington, KY; sisters: Henrietta Ketchersid of
Morristown, TN, Greta and husband Carl Bolton of Tazewell, TN, Anna and husband Floyd
Gray of Dandridge, TN; sister-in-law: Jean White Overton of Tazewell, TN; nieces
and nephews: Karen and husband Dick Krieg, Vivian and husband Jackie Barnard,
Carla and husband Brett Cammeron, Scott and wife Kim Bolton, Dan Bolton,
David and wife Vickie Overton, Terry Overton, Rosemary and husband Richard Jones,
Deborah Gray, Nancy (Gray) and husband Hank Barnett; grand nieces and nephews:
Justin and Ashley Krieg, Angle Overton, Gretchen and Jacklin and Jackson
Barnard, Molly Bolton, Chelsea and Brock Cammeron The family will receive friends
from 4:30-7:30 pm Saturday at the Claiborne Funeral Home. A Masonic service
will be conducted at 7:30 pm Saturday in the Claiborne Funeral Home Chapel by
the Evening Star Lodge #180, F&AM, of Tazewell, TN. Funeral services will be
conducted at 8 pm Saturday in the Claiborne Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev.
Frank Brooks and the Rev. Bill Rimmer officiating. Music will be provided by
Rusty and Althea Hardin. Graveside services will be conducted at 9 am Sunday in
the Overton Cemetery. Pallbearers: Collier Smith, Will Smith, Jackson Overton,
David Overton, Terry Overton, Richard Jennings, Randy Jennings. Honorary
Pallbearers: Joe Overton, Billy Joe Overton, Gene Watkins, Allen Patterson. In lieu
of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Tazewell
United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 65, Tazewell, TN 37879. Claiborne Funeral Home
is in charge.
