John Brummitt, age 62, of Speedwell, passed away at his home April 17, 2007

He was of The Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents: Harley
Brummitt and Lucille Brooks Brummitt Shupe; half-brother: Kenneth Shupe.

Survivors include his son: John Franklin Brummitt of Sharps Chapel;
daughters: Katina Nicely of Maynardville, Robin McCarty of Sharps Chapel; former wife:
Sherry Robertson Brummitt of Maynardville; brothers: Eugene Brummitt, Wesley
Brummitt, Clyde Brummitt all of Speedwell; sister: Mary Ogle of Maryville,
Gladys Williams of Cocoa, Fl.; seven grandchildren.

SHIRLEY EDDS BUCHANAN

Shirley Edds Buchanan, age 61, of New Tazewell, was born September 12, 1945
and passed away April 18, 2007 at her home.

She was a lifelong member of Liberty Baptist Church. She was preceded in
death by her mother: Josephine McDaniel Edds; grandparents: Charlie and Martha
Jane Spradling McDaniel and Henry and Lennie Mason Edds.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years (married January 17, 1966): Hubert
Buchanan Jr. of New Tazewell; son: Mark A. Buchanan; daughter: Monette
Buchanan Meyers; son and daughter-in-law: Matthew and Jeannie Buchanan;
grandchildren: Austin Meyers, Trey Buchanan, Taylor Buchanan and Brooke Buchanan all of
New Tazewell; honorary grandchildren: Brandon Carter and Tabitha Graves;
brothers and sisters-in-law: Charles and Judy Edds, Bob and Brenda Edds all of
Tazewell; father and step-mother: Rev. Tommy and Grace Edds; several nieces, nephews
and a host of other relatives and friends.

BARBARA SUE WILLIAMS

Barbara Sue Williams, age 73, of Tazewell, was born February 7, 1934 and
passed away April 20, 2007.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Charles and Anna Booth.

She is survived by her fianc/: Herbert Goins of Tazewell; daughter: Joyce
Southall and husband Marion; grandchildren: Shashawna, Caitlandt, Shaianna, and
TreShaun Southall all of Knoxville; and a host of friends.

Funeral services were Monday, April 23 at 11 a.m. in the Claiborne Funeral
Home Chapel with Rev. George Ramsey officiating. Music by the Goins Family.
Burial in the Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville.

LUCY CHADWELL

Lucy Golden Payne Chadwell, was born January 3, 1908 and passed away April
18, 2007 at Laurel Manor Health Care in New Tazewell.

She was the oldest member of Riverview Baptist Church. She was the daughter
of the late J.B. and Bertha Fletcher Payne. As well as her parents, Lucy was
preceded in death by her husband: Riley Morgan Chadwell; son: Robert Sherrill
Chadwell; infant son: Billy Carrol; grandson: Larry Morgan Dunn; son-in-law:
Douglas Dunn.

She is survived by her children: Mrs. Cecil (Mildred) Fultz of New Tazewell,
Harry Cleston and Julia Chadwell of San Marcas, Ca., Riley Morgan Chadwell of
Omaha, Ne, Mary Cornelia Chadwell Dunn of Fairfax, Va.; and a host
grandchildren, great, great grandchildren.

Funeral services were Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m. at Coffey Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Swan Bush and Clyde Sandifur officiating. Songs by Ralph and
Ray Fultz. Burial in the Riverview Cemetery.

Retta Cobb, age 94, a lifelong resident of Speedwell, was born February 4,
1913 and went to be with the Lord Sunday, April 15, 2007.

She was preceded in death by her husband: James Cobb; son: Elsworth;
grandchildren: James Edward Cobb, Jr., Terri Lynn Cobb; parents: John and Elizabeth
Thomas Treadway; twin sister: Etta Treadway; five brothers; four sisters;
sons-in-law: Green Smith, Frank Smith; granddaughter-in-law: Jane Smith.

She is survived by her children: Kathleen (James) Smith of LaFollette,
Imogene (Ralph) Smith of Speedwell, Lorene Smith of Speedwell, Chris (Roger) Smith
of Speedwell, John (Margie) Cobb of Phoenix City, Al., James (Jo) Cobb of
Lenoir City, Billy (Laura) Cobb of Lake City, Robert (Sybil) Cobb of Speedwell,
Vicki (Keith) Berry of Speedwell, Tony (Mary) Cobb of Monroe, Mi.; 37
grandchildren; 71 great grandchildren; 35 great-great grandchildren; a host of other

Claude Cosby, age 65, of Harrogate, was born August 2, 1941 and passed away
April 16, 2007 at Claiborne County Hospital.

He was a member of Poplar Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He worked for
A.J.&J. Trucking for 32 years. He was preceded in death by his parents: Clint and
Eppie Martin Cosby; brothers: Hollis Cosby and Lucas Buchanan; sister: Mae
Venable.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years: Maxine Cosby of Harrogate; daughter
and son-in-law: Susan and Bruce Williams of Hancock County; son: David Reckner
of Morristown; brothers: Kenneth Cosby of Springfield, Oh., Clint Cosby Jr. of
Harrogate, Leon Cosby of Decherd; sister: Hazel Crutchfield of Florida;
several nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

ANNETTE ELLISON

Annette Ellison, age 93, of Monroe, Mi., was born December 2, 1913 in
Speedwell and passed away April 20, 2007 at Tendercare of Monroe, Mi.

She was the daughter of the late Jesse and Emma (Ausmus) Russell. She
attended the Church of God Mountain Assembly. In additions to her parents she is
preceded in death by her husband: Clyde Ellison; son-in-law: John P. Matias; a
grandson; several brother and sisters.

She is survived by her children: William J. (Karen) Ellison of Jackson, Mi.,
Mary L. (Linford) Price of Milan, Mi., and Emma J. Matias of Maybee, Mi.;
sister: Malinda Russell Owens of LA; 11 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren;
several great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were Tuesday, April 24 at 11 a.m. at the Church of God
Mountain Assembly with Rev. Rick Massingill and Rev. Fred Cornelius officiating.
Interment in the Woodland Cemetery.

DON EVANS

Don Evans, age 76, of New Tazewell, was born May 17, 1930 in Speedwell and
passed away April 17, 2007 at his home.

He was the son of the late Lee and Pearl Madon Evans. He professed faith in
Christ as his savior at Red Hill Baptist Church as a young person. He was
currently a member of Carrs Branch Baptist Church where he had served as Sunday
School Superintendent in the past. He was a retired bookkeeper for various oil
and coal companies, and was also a former member of Pinnacle Lodge #661 and
Blazing Star Lodge # 455. He also spent a short time in The United States Army. In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son: Warren K. Evans
in 1986: two brothers: Lem and Roger Evans; one sister: Theresa Evans.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years: Dolores Giles Evans of New
Tazewell; sons and wives: Richard and Teresa Evans of Louisville, Ky., Mitchell
and Mary Ann Evans of Middlesboro, Ky.; grandchildren: Tara Evans and fianc/
Derek Monahan of Louisville, Ky., Tyler Evans of Louisville, Ky., Nikki and
husband Brandon Griffin of Middlesboro, Ky.; great-grandchild: Conner Griffin of
Middlesboro, Ky.; brothers: Guy and Lowell Evans both of Speedwell; sisters:
Bethel Brown of Knoxville, Althea Davis of Ypsilanti, Mi., Verda Lou Burns of

FRED M. HURST

Fred M. Hurst, age 89, of Tazewell passed away April 3, 2007 at St. Mary's
Residence Hospice.

He had formerly resided for the past 5 years at Windsor Gardens Assisted
Living Center in Knoxville. He studied biology at the University of Tennessee from
1936-40 and was a member of the 1940 Class. Afterwards, he was commissioned a
U.S. Navel Officer and chosen to attend Officer Candidate School and became
an aviator. He piloted PBY and PMB seaplanes and B-24 bombers during five
years' service to his country. He was stationed in Norfolk, Jacksonville, Bermuda,
San Juan, Brazil and San Diego. In 1943 he married his high school sweetheart,
Ruby Keck, a school teacher. The returned to Claiborne County and began
life-long businesses which they built, operated and managed together for more than
54 years. Hurst Dry Goods Dept. Store in New Tazewell, Dixie Plaza Motel in
Tazewell and Hilltop Business Center are among their former and current
interests. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in New Tazewell and was
men's Sunday School Teacher for many years. He was preceded in death by his
parents: James Nelson and Roxie Bundren Hurst; wife Ruby Keck Hurst.

Survivors include his son, Knoxville physician: Fred A. Hurst M.D. and his
wife Deena Sharpe Hursh; their son: James W. Hurst, M.D. who practices medicine
with his father in Halls and his wife Minde Meece Hurst; Dr. Diana Gwynn Hurst
Collins and husband David N. Collins, M.D. of Lookout Mountain and
Chattanooga and their children: Laura Catherine Collins of Washington D.C., Andrew David
Collins and Mary Elizabeth Collins of Lookout Mountain; brother: Frank G.
Hurst and wife Gladys of Tazewell; numerous cousins, extended family members, and
countless friends and acquaintances he made throughout his long life.

Graveside services were Friday, April 6 at 2 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery
with Rev. Dr. Charles D. Earl officiating.

GLESSIE M. JEWELL

Glessie M. Jewell, age 83, was born March 25, 1924 in Harrogate and passed
away Friday, April 20, 2007 at the Medilodge of Monroe, Mi.

She was the daughter of Jerry and Doxie (Davis) Cosby. She was a member of
Frenchtown Missionary Baptist Church and Frenchtown Senior Citizens. She married
Austin Payne on August 24, 1994 in Middlesboro, Ky. and he passed away in
1986. She married Henry Jewell in 1990 in Monroe, Mi. and he passed away in 1998.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her
brother: Charlie; and infant brother: James Jr.

Survivors include her sisters: Mollie Ferguson of Monroe, Mi., Josephine
(John) Massengill of Flat Rock, Mi., Ruby Jean (James) Essary, Phyllis Dyer all of
Tazewell, Sue (Glenn) Allen of Seymour; brothers: Ernest (Hazel) Cosby, Ben
(Betty) Cosby, Howard (Bessie) Cosby, Jack (Carole) Cosby all of Monroe, Mi.,
Clyde (Louise) Cosby of Tazewell, Elmer Cosby of Knoxville, and Rondal (Joan)
Cosby of Shawanee.

Funeral Home in Monroe, Mi. Burial in the Roselawn Memorial Park.

Loretta Maples, age 66, of New Tazewell, was born October 5, 1940 and passed
away April 21, 2007 at Fort Sanders Hospital in Knoxville.

She was of the Baptist Faith. She was loved by her community at Tazewell
Village Apartments. She was preceded in death by her mother: Trula Clark Miller;
brother: Bobby Miller; sister: Fawnetta Miller; husband: Swan Maples.

She is survived by her sons: David Lynn Miller of Toledo, Oh., Swan Stephen
Maples of Erie, Mi., Timothy Mark Maples of Tazewell; grandchildren: Tammy Sue
Raines, Destiny Riess, Shane Maples, Josh Maples, and Tyler W. Maples; great
grandchildren: Kelsy, Alexis, and William; father: Clarence Miller; brothers:

Frank Eugene Massengill, age 74, of Harrogate, was born January 10, 1933 and
passed away April 22, 2007.

He was the son of the late Sterling and Bessie Leonard Massengill. He was a
member of Bethel Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in
death by his wife: Eunice Faye Eastridge Massengill; sister: Bonnie Lanham; an
infant brother: Lonnie Massengill.

Survivors include his daughters: Annette Massengill, Anita (David) Anderson
all of Harrogate; sons: Edward (Pauline) Massengill, Verlin (Melissa)

Mildred B. Robinson, age 77, of Cumberland Gap, was born June 8, 1929 and
passed away April 20, 2007 at her home after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her mother: Lela Herron; father: Jessee
Teffeteller; sister: Mary Echols; loving husband: George C. Robinson.

She is survived by her daughter: Brenda Poore (Don); grandsons: John Coward

Roxie Williams, age 93, formerly of Harrogate, passed away in Florida April
14, 2007.

She was preceded in death by husband: Felton L. Williams; daughter: Patricia
Vencinzo; mother: Nellie Scruggs; sister: Elizabeth Garland.

Survivors include her son: Dan (Julie) Williams and family; daughter: Agnes
(Bill) Jones and family; grandsons: Billy Dortin, Bobby (Ruby) Dortin; great

NORMA FERN SINGLETON

Norma Fern Singleton was born April 2, 1930 and passed away April 19, 2007 at
Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Fredrick Maryland.

She professed faith in Christ November 26, 1942 at the home of her sister
Lona Cole. She was baptized and joined Straight Creek Missionary Baptist Church.
While living in Knox County she moved her letter to Bethany Baptist Church
upon moving back to Claiborne County she moved her letter to Howerton's Baptist
Church where she was a member until her death. Fern worked 5 years for the
Claiborne County school department and 22 and a half years for the Claiborne
County Clerks office. She was preceded in death by her husband: J.P. Singleton;
son: Alan Brett Singleton; parents: Lon and Ethel Rosenbalm Needham; brothers:
James Donald and Henry Wayne Needham; infant sister: Margaret Needham.

She is survived by her son: J.P. Singleton Jr. and wife Norma Jean, Larry and
wife Edie, David and wife Karen and daughter: Pamela (Penny); grandchildren:
Stacie Welsh, Jason Singleton, Jerry, Donna, and David Wright, Summer Buis and
Jeremy Bolden; great grandchildren: Steven, Garrett, Kassidy, Elle and Tyler
Wright and Dylan Buis; brothers: Howard Needham, Cawood and wife Betty, Fay
and wife Brenda, Ray and wife Darlene and George Needham; sisters: Dorthy Keck

SAM TUCKER


Sam Tucker, age 91, of Tazewell, was born March 5, 1916 and passed away April
7, 2007 at Claiborne County Hospital of a heart attack.

He was of the Baptist Faith and attended Hoop Creek Baptist Church. He worked
many years for the City of New Tazewell. He was preceded in death by his wife
of 69 years: Gladys Viola Mize Tucker. They both were hard working farmers
and parents of 11 children. Also preceding him in death were his parents: Arch

He is survived by his sons: Sillus (Slim) and wife Lovetta Tucker of
Shelbyville, Ky., James Dempsey Tucker of Brooklyn, Ny., Harry and wife Juanita Tucker
of Morristown, Michael and wife Tonya Tucker of Knoxville, Grant Allen Tucker
of Tazewell, Thomas Lynn and wife Sharon Tucker of Morristown; daughter:
Teresa Lovonne Tucker of New Tazewell; a host of grandchildren, great
grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; sister: Artie Tucker of Indianapolis, In.;
several nieces, nephews, and other special relatives; special friends: The
Fugate Family, The Brooks Family, The Ford Family, Leo Yoakum, Eleanor Yoakum,
Frances Noe, Medical Center Pharmacy, Dr. Robert J. Wilmoth, Bill Landry, WNTT,

Funeral services were Thursday, April 12 at 1 p.m. in the Coffey Funeral Home
Chapel with Elder James Goins officiating. Scripture by Dorothy Snodgrass.
Songs by Dorothy Wells. Tribute by Pat Tucker. Burial in the Fugate Cemetery.

Pallbearers: David Fugate, Tony Cloud, Terry Cloud, Rodney Fugate, Jeff
