Good Morning Pat,
I have looked at the material you sent Jim Webb in Jacksonville, Florida. I
have a couple of questions. What is your record or proof that the father of
John and Jesse was named John Webb? You have Jesse as being born in Green
County, Tennessee about 1766. I have looked and searched the records for
information, and to this date continue to search. I dont want to give anyone
information that I cant prove.
Greene County was not created until 1783 and Tennessee did not become a
state until 1796. That being so, Jesse could not have been born in Greene
Copunty, Tennessee.
Another little problem. You have John Webb as being buried in Martin Baker
Cemetery. There was no Martin Baker Cemetery when John died. Many people
have tried to find a clue as to where John was buried. So far no grave site
has been found.
In my search for the parents of John and Jesse I found where Jesse did a
land transation in Georgia. The "Heirs of Thomas Webb" applied for and
received 200 acres in Wilkes County, Georgia, from an old warrant. The land
was located on the South Fork of the Broad River and was the same land that
Jesse Webb agreed to make a good title to Nathan Barnett in 1783. Jesse is
identified as heir of Thomas Webb. Receiving the grant was obviously part of
clearing the title. Thomas Webb therefore was deceased by 1783 and had been
a settler of Georgia from at least the beginning of the revolutionary war.
The grant of 200 acres was the amount for a settler, but not a family. It is
possible that Jesse did not apply for a larger amount of land because to
increase the amount by 50 acres for each family member or slave caused a fee
to be added for each. I do not know if Thomas was a father or brother to
Jesse. Jesse's brother John was not mentioned, probably because John was by
this time married and living in what is now East Tennessee. This is the
closest record that I have been able to find regarding possible relatives of
John and Jesse. I have seen many family histories that list their father as
John Webb, but I have found no proof.
We have so much information being passed around that is not documented and
not proven. All I am asking is that you give me your documentation and proof
of these records you are passing out to other people.
