Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2000 19:08:43 EDT
Today I received the 1860 Cocke Co. census on the following HILL family,
which sure looks as though it could be my GGrandfathers family. I'm
beginning to wonder just how many ways his name can be spelled? Is it any
wonder that we have such a hard time tracking down our ancestors!!!

Riley H. Hill is listed in the Index of Confederate Pensions.
His claim was rejected Dec. 5, 1905. The Pension Review Board said they
couldn't find any records of him. (note: I went through the Confederate
Parole Records and found a Royal Hilo in 62 TN Inf. Co. I? I wonder if this
is Riley. As Riley was apparently illiterate - he marked X on his pension
application - he would have had no way of knowing if his name was entered
wrong on the roster)
On his pension application he stated he was born May 24, 1844 in Cox Co., Tn.
near Newport. (note: all other records I have found stated 1843?)
He enlisted May 1862 Co. I 62 Tenn. Infantry Col. Rowans command. Capt.
Bill Smith. (The 62nd Tn Inf. Co I was mustered in Cocke Co. Tn) He was in
the seige of Vicksburg which lasted 48 days. He was captured July 4, 1863 by
the Federal's commanded by Grant and held until he was paroled.
His pension application was witnessed by Rhoda C. Hill, JANE BAUCOM and a
Dr. B.L. Moore.
Can I have finally found my GGGrandparents???
