Subject: [TNCOCKE] Does Jesse always equal Joseph
Date: Sun, 2 Jul 2000 19:53:53 -0400
I saw a recent post to the Holt family list and since my family came from
Greene and Cocke Counties in Tennessee, I am also posting this message there
as well.
Here is a portion of the post that sparked my curiousity.
Joseph (Jesse) Holt born in Amelia County, VA.
The person who posted this said that this Holt's name was Joseph with "Jesse
in brackets. My great great grandfather's name was Jesse Holt. In his
census records and his marriage record his name appears that way. However,
some of his decendents in another line, say they remember him being called
Joseph, just like is mentioned in the above post. What I was wondering and
hope that someone can clarify is whether or not Jesse was a nickname or
another name used for Joseph back in the 19th Century, much like Polly
seemed to be used for Mary a great deal.
My Jesse was the son of Jacob Holt who was the son of Wyatt Holt and that is
where the line stops because nobody can seem to decide who he was descended
from. I know that Wyatt had a son born in 1811 also named Jesse so when I
saw the above post about a Joseph (Jesse) Holt it made me curious about the
usage of the name and if this was a common thing for how this was used or
just a thing that was done in the Holt line. If so it might be the key
needed to unlock the mystery of Wyatt.
Anyway, any help with my questions will be appreciated.
Thanks
Richard Holt
