Signature on TNCocke mailing above says:
<<
"The eighth of August, 1865 Mr. Swagerty rang the dinner bell and called all
of the slaves in front of the big house and told us that we were free and
that we would have to look out for ourselves and families now."
Mrs. Augusta Swagerty Foster, who was a slave of old Colonel William Swagerty

I'm new to the list (ggg grands Thomas L. WILLIAMS & wife Franky MURRELL in
1840 Cocke census 90% sure (p. 275), Murrell...Bell/Swaggerty/Henry
friends/colaterals)....I do primarily VA research because that's where I
live.
Regarding the above quote from the Cocke Co list's signature:
The Library of Virginia has an email list on Virginia History. In the midst
of a discussion of Jefferson/Sally Hemings/the Carrs, slavery...someone noted
that it is suggested that Lincoln didn't free the slaves, he fired them.
A sidelight from Virginia research on the surname Cocke. Apparently at one
point in either Henrico Co or Chesterfield Co in the 1700s where there were
numerous cases involving Cocke families, a judge, tired of all the ribald
comments from the peanut galleries when such cases were before him, declared
that the name would henceforth be spelled Cox as long as he presided so he
could maintain order in his court room. I have no documentation on this, but
I don't doubt it. My apologies if I have offended anyone.
I have just reviewed the census records for 1830 and 1840 in Cocke Co, and
will post my lines soon, with the census (and tax lists from the website)
citations.
FYI, I did the census records and got quite excited...then I found out Cocke
is a burned Co. I have folks in Washington & Greene Co, so I wasn't quite
prepared for this.
Best Regards,
