I have been doing research on the Denton family for a long time even though I
have no direct line ties to the Denton families. My Click families have
intermarried into these families for years and in an attempt to sort them out have
collected lots of information that I thought I would share.
Samuel Denton b abt 1758 Virginia died 1814 in Washington Co Tenn leaving a
will, married his cousin Martha Denton. Samuel son of John Jun Denton and
Sarah O'Dell, and Martha Denton daughter of Samuel Denton and Margaret Moore.
Samuel Denton died 1814 had chidren:
Thomas (see below), Jonas (see below), John Jackson (see below), Lavina,
Jonathan (see below), David, Tabitha, Martha, Louisa, Abigail, Annna, and Samuel.
He owned land on Cherokee Creek in Washington Co and also on Cosby Creek in
Cocke Co Tn.
According to some information I have found from others, (don't know if it's
proven or not), Thomas Denton b 1780/1790 married Frances BORING b 1790 Tn. I
have been able to put together a fairly accurate compilation of their children.
I have a letter dated 1888 written by Louisa Denton wife of Houston Sisk to
her niece Mary Jane Click Doughty Bearden B 1836. Mary Jane was living in Cooke
Co Texas. Mary Jane Click was the daughter of Temperance Frances Denton Click
Murrell. After Henry Jackson Click, Jr died in 1840 Temperance married John
Murrell. They eventually moved to Giles Co Tenn by 1870 and then moved on to
Cooke Co Texas as well. I also have the bible records of Mary Jane Click Doughty
Bearden listing the death date of Temperance Murrell as 30 May 1878 which was
most likely in Cooke Co Texas. I can document that the Murrell's were in
Texas as early as 1875 so I'm pretty certain that Temperance did make it to Cooke
Co Texas before she died. Due to John Murrell's arrest by union forces during
the civil war I believe this is the reason they left Cocke Co with a bunch of
other Cocke Co families and moved to Giles Co Tenn. Her daughter Mary Jane
Click was already in Texas by that time. Temperance's other daughter was Martha
Click b 1838 married David T.Templin, who was a nephew of John Murrell. The
Templins stayed in Cocke Co
1830 Cocke Co Tenn

sister, children of Isaac Allen and Polly Weaver
5) Sarah Denton b 20 Feb 1818 d 20 Dec 1892 GILES CO TN married Calvin Allen.
among some of her 12 children are Temperance, Louisa, and Houston. Due to the
fact that Sarah went to Giles Co abt the same time Temperance and John
Murrell went and the names of these particular children indicate to me she is also a
daughter
6) Louisa "Lou" Denton b 1 Oct 1930 d 1920 Cocke Co married HOUSTON Sisk. dtr
Dora Madaline Sisk married James Manning Templin, son of Richard Templin and
Emelia Denton. Wrote the letter to Mary Jane Click stating "dear niece" in
1888. In the letter she mentions that Martha Click Templin had been by to see her.
We know for certain that Jonas Denton was a brother of Thomas Denton through
the will. Jonas remained in Washington Co Tenn and was born abt 1782. He wrote
a letter to Jefferson Denton (who married Charity Huff) 19 Apr 1870 and was
found in the papers of Jefferson's son Thomas Hal Denton.
Mr. Jefferson Denton
April 19, 1870
Dear Nephew
I embrace this opportunity to write you. Hope this may find you well, and
the balance of my connection. My own health is tolerably good. indeed for
one of my age very good. I am living with my son Henry. My wife has been
dead some two years. I am living somewhat a lonesome life, though enjoying
myself as well as I can (A C )? I want you to write to me as soon as you
conveniently can and let me know what has become of the "Denton" connection.
I want to know in particular what has become of my sister Vina Lillard and
Jonathon Dentons widdow and your mother. Let me know where Jonathon Dentons
children are (and) whether or not any of the boys lost their lives in the
late war. Also let me know about your brothers John and William. I want to
know what has become of brother Sam Dentons last woman and her children. If
you please let me hear from you ar you earliest convenience and give me all
the desired information as I am very anxious to know what has become of all
my connection. let me know about Cousin Abraham Denton. Do not think me
tedious -- if you please -- it will be great satisfaction to learn all that
(I) ask of you. I will give you all the news you ask of me in my next
letter to you.
Respectfully your uncle
Jonas Denton
John "Jackson" Denton b abt 1790 married his cousin Abigail Denton born 1 Mar
1792 Cosby, dtr of John Denton and Mary Moore. We have found bible records
for their children. Alpherd Denton b 15 Oct 1810 married Dorcas Click, sister of
Henry Jackson Click, Jr. Malinda was born 11 Dec 1812 and was living with
Temperance Denton Click Murrell in 1850. There were 6 children total.
Jonathan Denton died 1840/1850 Cocke Co married Sarah "Sally" b abt 1800
Jonathan according to census had 3 sons and 2 dtrs. I can only acct for 1 son
1) John P Denton b abt 1835 married Mary Duncan.
2) Elizabeth Denton b abt 1832 married John Murr, oldest son of Jeremiah Murr
and Rachel Click, sister of Darcus and Henry Jackson Click, Jr. She died abt
1867 After her death John Murr married her sister Harriet Denton.
3) Harriet Denton b abt July 1839 married 1st Charley Hux. They had 2
children Benjamin Lewis Hux (SEE ABOVE FANNIE DENTON, dtr of William Addison Denton)
b 11 July 1859 d 24 Aug 1922 and they had no children but took in one of the
Click boys and raised him. Their dtr Lydia C Hux b 1864 d 1940 Cocke Co married
Jacob M Hartsell, son of Joshua Hartsell and Cynthia Bayless and they had no
children either.
married 2nd John Murr 29 June 1868 Monroe Co Tenn where the Click's, Alpherd
Denton's, and Murr's had moved in the early 1850's. John and Harriet had one
son William A. Murr, but think he died young as he's not living with Harriet in
1880 and would have been a teenager.
I have documented this to help tie these families together. A big thanks goes
to Nancy Helvey and Marvin and Samme Templin in providing what information
they have, as well as Jennifer Seago from Texas who's husband Warren is a
descendant of Mary Jane Click Doughty Bearden and provided me with the 1888 letter
and Mary Jane's bible records which connects Temperance Frances Denton Click
Murrell to her parents from the letter of Louisa Denton Sisk
I hope this can help others out there looking for the Denton connections in
Cocke Co.
