Of all of my lines, one of the most difficult to trace has been the Baileys
and related families in Cocke County. They are never mentioned in O'Dell or
other easy places, and I've checked the census records that I could find.
Does anyone have a connection with the following:
David Bailey, born 1800-1810, died 1847-1850, married Julia Bandy, born ca.
1810 in North Carolina, died after 1860. Known children (there are probably
more):
Plasser [sp?], born about 1830, cannot find after 1850
Evaline [sp?], born about 1832, cannot find after 1850
George W., born about 1837, cannot find after 1850 (unless he's the other
George below)
Esther, born about 1838, cannot find after 1850
Penelope (Nellie), born May 1843, died 1937, married Noah Ellis (ca. 1839-
between 1883 and 1900)
William, born about 1841, cannot find after 1860, may have served in the
26th Tennessee
Reuben, born about 1845, cannot find after 1860, may have served in the 26th
Tennessee
John, born about 1848, cannot find after 1860
Noah Ellis (married Penelope above), appears to have been the son of John
Ellis, born about 1773 in South Carolina, died between 1850 and 1860 in
Cocke County. His mother was Charity, probably not John's first wife, born
about 1799 in Tennessee and died after 1860.
Noah and Nellie had a number of children, one of whom, Mary, married Noah
Bailey, a son of George Bailey of Cocke County, born about 1830. As far as I
know, this is not the same George Bailey in Dave Bailey's family above, but
I am not certain at the moment. Family lore says that this George Bailey
married twice and had 11 children by each wife; I have not been able to
prove that at this point, nor am I sure of the wives other than one was a
Mary.
The two(?) Bailey families, the Ellises, and the Bandys all date to the
first 50 years of Cocke County's existence; can anyone offer any clues about
them?
