Ken - According to "A History of Dickson County" by Robert E. Corlew,
Dickson County was named for William Dickson, "a young Nashville
physician and statesman who was serving in Congress at the time". He
lived 1770-1816 and "appears to have been well-respected and to have
exerted considerable influence in the affairs of Middle Tennessee". He
was elected speaker of the state house of representatives in 1799 and
served in Congress from 1801-1807. He was also a personal friend of
Andrew Jackson.
His father was Colonel William Dickson, an officer in the North
Carolina Revolutionary Army.
William Dickson never lived in Dickson County, but his first cousin
Molton Dickson did and was county surveyor and a state senator. Dickson
County was created by a bill passed Oct. 25, 1803.
Hope this helps. Tammie Whited
