Subject: [TNGILES-L] HELP - Please donate a little of your time to the 1870 Census

Hello Fellow Giles County Researcher,

Early last spring I responded to Dave Worsham's call for volunteers to help
transcribe the 1860 Giles County Census. Surprising myself, I said I would
help.
One of the motivating factors was that the Giles County WEB site was one of
the best organized and most informative sites I had ever visited. Therefore,
it only seemed natural that I should try to help and make a contribution, and
I'm glad I did.

The 1860 Giles County Census had 197 pages that were divided over a team of
about 10 folks. You can do the math as to about how many pages needed to be
transcribed per team member. The project started last April and just finished
several weeks ago. I'm sorry to say that some of my assigned pages were the
last to be completed. However, we did get it done. Members of the team were
also responsible for proofing the transcribed pages.

Now we are embarking on transcribing the 1870 GC Census. Dave has informed us
that there are nearly 400 pages for this one. Seems we still have the same
size team. That means double the number of pages per transcriber and proofer
and probably double the time before it is complete.

Therefore, I am asking for your help. The more folks we have helping
transcribe, the faster the project will get done and the less time each
person will have to spend transcribing and proofing. We need to double the
size of the Census Team.

Each page took me about 30 minutes to transcribe and we generally worked in 4
page blocks. We entered the data into a spreadsheet and sent it off to Dave
to send to a proofer. Then it showed up on the WEB Site for all you good
folks to use.

Please think about donating a couple of hours of your time over the next
several months to help this very worthy project. I think you will get a great
sense of accomplishment and meaningful contribution.

Thanks for reading and I hope to see you on the team.
Happy researching

John H DeHart
