Hi again everyone,
What a great group this is! Just wanted to share with you what I've learned in response to my request on this list and
also the Williamson County list. It might prove useful for someone else.
1. Yes, there is a statewide index for 1850 TN Census, but no, the Old Records Dept. in Pulaski doesn't have it.
2. This is a neat site for finding free online census records: http://census-online.com/links/index.html
3. My gg grandparents James Russell and Elizabeth Hale (Hall) were married in Williamson County, TN. (Yay!) But,
they are not listed in the 1850 Williamson County census. (Boo!)
5. The pay site www.ancestry.com has searchable census indices online if you're a member. I was able to search the
1850 TN census index for James Russell and had about 21 hits in numerous counties. The funny thing was that I already
had the ancestry.com membership, but I just haven't spent time looking at everything that's available. They'll soon
have the actual census images available for yet another fee. Another pay site, Family Tree Maker's
www.genealogylibrary.com already has them apparently. This information all came from a very kind soul on the Williamson
County list who responded to my look-up request, and did the look-up for me.
So I learned lots of things by asking the list my question, and I appreciate all the responses. I also regrettably
learned once again how spoiled we are by the Giles County Rootsweb site. I guess the pay sites fill in the gaps for
all the states and counties that aren't as fortunate to have a dedicated group of volunteers like Giles.
Thanks to everyone who responded!
Jane

P.S. If any John Boyd researchers know why he and Samuel Cox kept beating each up in 1815, I'd love to hear the story.
