>Does anyone recognize any of the following?

> ELI HODGES
>
>This file will be used to list any information concerning Eli. There is the
possibility that he was a son of Ambrose, based on the location, date of his
death and association with some known descendants of Ambrose. [ the spelling
"ELI" was not used in any documents prior to this time. I suspect that this
was a "short spelling" for his proper name, i.e Elijah, Elihu, Elisha ]
>
>Eli Hodges B. c 1784-94 (1810 was 16-26)
> D. 1832
>In 1810 census of Grainger Co., Eli was listed as 16-26 and Elizabeth was
10-16. They must have married when she was 13.
>
>[src. TSLA roll 24, pg 226:: 24 Jan 1851, Report to Commissioners of the
dower of Elizabeth Hodges widow of Eli Hodges, decd.]
>Elizabeth was appointed Guardian of Eli's heirs and was still paying Land
Taxes from his estate in 1853. Elizabeth could not write and signed the
Guardian Report with a "plain" "X".
>
>[ From Jerry on 11/17/94;; 1802 Eli sold land to William McCarver and
bought land from Jacob Wilson on "South side of Holston River", and in 1829
bought land from Levena Gray. ] ** if this is true, at the oldest, Eli would
have been 18 years old in 1802. **
>
>Eli was commissioned Lieutenant in the 7th Regiment of Tennessee Militia on
12/14/1814. A Phillip Hodge was commissioned Ensign in the same Regiment on
3/21/1814. Both were in Grainger County.
>
>On 10 Feb. 1816, Eli bought 140 acres in Grainger Co. at the head of
Hodge's Creek and on the South side of Holston River for $300. The seller
was Jacob Wilson and witnesses were Henry Boatman, Ninian Riggs and Jesse
Prichard. The land was on Rigg's line to Welcom Hodge's corner and then to a
conditional line between Ambrose Hodges and Henry Haggard land's. This land
was originally granted to Henry Haggard by North Carolina on 30 October 1794
and was grant #215.
>
>Eli received Grant #712 for 160 acres in Hiwassee District on 11/29/1820.
Bk 2, Pg 154 [ this area was near "Southwest Point" which is where
Kingston, Roane Co. is located today ]
>Hiwassee was purchased from the Cherokee by the Federal Government in 1819.
Lying between the Little Tennessee and Hiwassee Rivers, the land was to be
sold in a range of $0.125 to $1.50 an acre, cash only.
>[ none of Eli's heirs lived on this land and it was not transferred or
sold, as far as I have found. My guess is that he gave the land to Rachel
and William in leu of their inheritance from Ambrose. Rachel and William
moved to this location c 1840-1845.]
>
>Eli received Grant #13391 for 83 acres in Grainger Co. on 9/19/1826. Bk 11,
Pg 450
>
>Estate property sold on 4/18/1838 - Adm. were John M. Hodges and Henry
Holston (Elizabeth's father) Recorded on 5/10/1838. One of the buyers was
listed as "Elis" Hodges (son). Most of the estate was purchased by William
Hodges (brother ?). (Isaac Barton was mentioned in the Commissioners Report.
See land indenture from Welcom to Isaac Barton in "AMBROSE.GEN" file. This
took place in 1789) I saw no land being transferred, so my assumption is
that it passed to his wife and heirs.
