Hi- here's the scoop on anchors on tombstones- "Anchor- an attribute of Saint
Nicholas, patron saint of seamen, and a Christian symbol for hope and
steadfastness. "Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul both sure and
steadfast... Hebrews 6:19"" from book "Underfoot" by David Weitzman. In
addition- a quote from a Scotish stone: 'Tho boreas and Nepto his waves hath
tossed me to and fro yet by the order of God's decree I harbourr here below
where now I ly at anchor sure with many of owre fleet expecting on day to set
sail. My Admiral to meet.' from "Stones : A Guide to Some Remarkable 18th
Century Gravestones" by Betty Willsher and Doreen Hunter". Guess you'll have
to search the individual's history to find his connection to the sea. He was
sure along way from it in Grainger Co. Is the marker a memorial? Perhaps he
was buried at sea. Good luck. Susan Beeler Anderson, San Gabriel CA.
