Hi again everybody,
I am really struggling to get back to my research again. As I have written
to some of you privately my father was ill last summer and died at the end
of August.
Anyway I didn't have much time to write to the list last summer and this
fall. I have never really gotten "caught up". I do remember very early one
morning that I was trying to get off a letter to the list (I am the world's
slowest typist) and my DH patiently asking "Gail don't you think one of the
OTHER Mayes researchers on the list will tell Eleanor when Goodwin died?"
Or when the TVA transcriptions came up. Began first email..never sent..
"You are confusing the TVA and the WPA. Well somebody else answered the
question. This is a common enough error. Years ago when I rented the WPA
transcriptions (I went ahead and bought the film..one of my first
genealogical resource purchases) I remember sitting at my neighbor's
microfilm machine all teary eyed because Amanda wife of John H. Ivy was
under the lake <grin> Economy is NOT under the lake, of course..
Second email, "There is a book out now by Douthat....Somebody knew that
too. I really feel almost obliged to buy the book since I have been
pestering Signal Mountain for years.. okay maybe I just send an email every
couple of years or so..unfortunately for my budget the book costs 55
dollars..However, this book is starting to look like a serious bargain. I
have now been through the TVA films once. When I ordered the first film in,
the first time I got to the center, a researcher from a distance had the
reader/printer (he was there all day <sigh> didn't even stop for lunch) I
had to renew the film since it is so hard for me to get to St. Joe. The
next time I went down to the FHC I was standing there on the steps when the
center opened and I just seated myself at the reader/printer and <grin>
madly pressed the copy key for hours.
Second film...I arrived at the FHC fairly early and found it totally jammed
(they had paved the parking lot and it was the fist day after they opened up
again.) Another trip, another day of madly punching the button...and a
really BAD crook in my neck. As I said the Signal Mountain book might be a
good buy. <grin>
Also I noticed despite my many hastily began (and never sent) emails as my
DH said "OTHER RESEARCHERS KNOW THESE THINGS TOO!! <grin>...you do not have
to answer every question...!!!
Gail
