John Bowers and Christian Bowers Jr. were sons of Christian Bowers Sr. and Elizabeth nee Schindeldecker. They came to Greene Co. TN from Shenandoah Co. VA in the early 1800s. Their sister Catherine was probably the sponsor at the baptism of Susanna dau. of John and Margaret Welty in Shenandoah Co. VA in 1790. I have been researching this Bowers (Bauer) family prior to their settling in VA and TN and found some interesting info in Frederick Co. MD and a possible link to the birth place in Germany of Christian Bowers Sr. In the 1750s both Bowers (several different ones) and Schindeldeckers are in the records at Christ Lutheran Church in York PA. In 1760 a Jacob Shingutaker received a land patent in Frederick Co. MD for 100 acres called Long Swamp. In 1764 a Christian Bowers also received a land patent in Frederick Co. MD for 20 acres called New Garden. In 1767 Jacob Shoneldecker recorded a mortgage in Frederick Co. MD for his household goods. In 1768 Elizabeth (wife or daughte!
r) and Jacob (son) Shingletaker were executors of the estate of Jacob Shingletaker in Frederick Co. MD. Elizabeth Shindeldecker m. Christian Bowers Sr. sometime before 1769 when there first (?) child Christian Jr. was born. There were land transactions involving a Christian Bowers in 1764 in Frederick Co. MD and in 1773 and 1774 in Baltimore Co. MD where John Welty may have been living then. A Christian Bowers also appears on the 1783 tax list in northwest Baltimore Co. MD. These may not be the same Christian Bowers. The Christian Bowers Sr.of Shenandoah Co VA appears first in a land transaction in Shenandoah Co. VA in 1785. He is also on the 1785 census there.
A most interesting death and burial record at Christ Luth. Church in York Co. PA says that Catherine Sohn nee Hornig died 1759. She first m. Johann Bauer of Strassburg (Germany now France) on Nov. 7, 1736. He died in 1746 and she came to America with her two dau. and one son in 1751. She m. Joh. George Sohn on Dec. 24, 1751. He died in 1761 with no children from the second marriage. The name of the son is not mentioned but could it be Christian Bowers Sr.? A picture of his gravemarker in Solomon Luth. Church in Shenandoah Co. VA has his date of birth as 1736 and date of death as 1815. Also there was a Christian Bowers from Frederick Co. MD nat. in 1772 in York Co. PA which may be him indicating he was not born in America. Has anyone researched the records around Strassburg France to see if the Johann Bauer who died there in 1746 had a son named Christian about 1736 or 1737? It looks promising.
