MRS. EMMA WELLS DIES AT HER HOME

Funeral Services Will Be Held Today at 11 a.m.

Mrs. Emma MIDDLETON WELLS, 77 widely known and beloved here for
her philanthropic and welfare work over a span of many years, died at
her home at 833 Oak Street yesterday morning.
Mrs. WELLS was one of the city's best known citizens and was a
philanthropist from the time of her early womanhood. She was born at
Elizabethtown, KY., on Nov 5, 1867, the daughter of Capt. Hugh
MIDDLETON and Mary CARTER MIDDLETON. After her marriage to Mr. WELLS,
she went with him to Rockwood, where he was manager of the Roane Coal
and Iron Company there. They returned to Chattanooga about eight
years later.
She was outstanding in welfare work here, not only in the First
Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member for many years, but
throughout the city. She was a charter member and a lifelong
President of the Old Ladies Home, and also was active in the
Chattanooga Writers' Club, the Gen. A. P. Stewart Chapter, United
Daughters of the Confederacy, the Chattanooga Women's Press Club and
the American Red Cross.
INTERESTED IN LEWIS MISSION
Mrs. WELLS was also interested in Lewis Mission on Chestnut
Street, and she and her husband established the Citico Mission 40
years ago, which now exists under another name. It was at her
suggestion that the letters of the missionaries of the old Brainerd
Mission were reproduced on microfilm and placed in the Chattanooga
Library.
Interested in history, she wrote a history of Roane County, and
she also wrote much concerning the activities of the women in her
church.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Edward BLAKE, and one
brother, Charles B. MIDDLETON of Hollywood, Calif.
Members of her family have requested that no flowers be sent for the
funeral. The services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the First
Presbyterian Church, with the pastor, the Rev. James L. FOWLE,
officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hills Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be John BROWN, Dr. Stewart LAWWILL,
Robert FRIERSON, William PRESSLEY, Clifford DUKE, and Sam CHESTER.
Honorary pallbearers will be the elders and deacons of the
church. They will meet at the church at 10:15 a.m.

(This is a 2nd cousin twice removed of mine - does anyone have any
MIDDLETONS, WELLS, or CARTERS?)

** Charles B. MIDDLETON (her brother) was an actor in Hollywood "Best
remembered as that satanic practitioner of doom, Emperor Ming the
Merciless, in the famous 'Flash Gordon' serials of 1936 through 1940."
