Gary,

1870 Census, Wayne Co., TN
72/72 Muler Curtis 30 TN farmer 11th C. D.
Hannah L. 28 MS
Mary 8 AL
Martha E. 4 TN
Harvey 2 TN

The 11th C. D. of Wayne Co. is in the extreme southeast corner of the county
adjacent to AL.

1880 Census Hardin Co., TN
102 Harvel Curtis 35 TN TN TN 5th C. D.
Hannah 34 AL AL AL
Mary A. 16 AL
Martha E. 14 TN
Harvey 12 TN
Randolph 9 TN
Nancy E. 5 TN
George D. 3 TN

In 1880, this family lived in the general area of Aenon Cemetery, probably
in the triangle of Aenon, Cross Roads and the Harmony Church area. They
are living near Jesse Turner, household 100, and Augustus F. Whitlow,
household 105. Jesse was my g/g/grandfather and Augustus a g/grandfather.

I find a marriage record for E. D. Alexander and M. A. Curtis, license 26
Feb. 1881, marriage 27 Feb. 1881, M. J. Whitlow a witness, H. R. Hinkle,
clerk and D. A. Baxter, J.P. This is Ezekiel Dempsy Alexander and Mary A.
Curtis. They were both still living in 1900. Milton Jasper Whitlow, the
witness, was a brother to my g/grandfather Augustus Whitlow. Milton J.
Whitlow married Sarah Winnie Alexander, a sister to Ezekiel D. Alexander.
Milton and Winnie Whitlow moved to Searcy Co., AR in the 1880's.

It appears that several of the Harvel (Murrill?) Curtis family are buried at
Aenon. Martha Curtis Johnson, 09/20/1866-01/26/1897, as you say, may be the
mother of Will Johnson? There are two Johnson infants also buried at Aenon.
One, 08/ 31/1896-12/31/1896, and another, William Claud Johnson,
08/02/1902-10/02/1907.

George D. (B.?) Curtis, brother of Mary A. and Martha E., married Flora
Mattie Stanfield, the daughter of my g/g/grandparents, John A. and Elizabeth
Copeland Stanfield. They had two children, Ora E. Curtis, b. 1898 and
Jesse H. Curtis, b. 1899.

Murrell Stanfield built the store on Smokey Road ca 1947-48. He sold it to
Albert D. Jennings a few years later. That old building still stands.
However, there was an earlier store building very near that location which
belonged to Granville Whitlow and was later run by his great nephew, Tony
Blackwelder. The first store was possibly abandoned in the 30's.

What a web we weave.

David
