Mary, the Lauderdale County Historical Society has been extracting the
newspaper's references to persons who died and publishing them in their
newsletter which is produced every other month ($10 per year). We began
doing that in 1995.
The earliest extant issue of a local newspaper that we know about was one
of the Ripley Weekly News on August 29, 1872; then there was one dated
June 12, 1874. There are two of the Ripley Enterprise dated Sept. 18, 1883
and March 12, 1886. Those issues can be seen on microfilm at the Lauderdale
County Enterprise office as mentioned above.
The earliest extant Lauderdale County Enterprise issue is May 18, 1888--there
is a skip to Feb 27, 1891--a skip to March 11, 1892--a skip to May 22,
1896. From there they are REASONABLY solid. I believe there is a one-year
skip around 1900, with maybe another 6-month skip, and an occasional missing
issue. We are presently reading at the end of 1914.
