Hi All, this is in response to Ken Moore's request for Ed Fulmer's snailmail
address and Ed's New Jersey lineage. They have introduced a fascinating
topic. I hope we can explore it further for the benefit of all.
My name is Joyce Browning. I'm Editor of MOORE NEWS. In the course of the
original research we are producing and distributing, we've discovered a group
of families from the Chesapeake area who went to Pennsylvania and southern
New Jersey when William Penn was soliciting settlers in the late 1600s. Some
also went to Maryland - and ended up in Sussex Co, Delaware when it was
formed. These were Puritans, or dissenters under another name, who arrived
in Virginia when dissent was acceptable; and/or they were branches of the
same merchant family moving in to serve new markets.
It has been a remarkable experience to make this discovery; but we are only
on the cusp of the wave. Now Ed presents a set of Moore names who appear to
originate in Massachusetts and Ireland:
1. Edward Moores b. Ireland D. Newberry, MA
2. Mathew Moores b. Newberry d. 25 Mar 1692 Woodbridge, NJ m. Sarah
3. William Moores b. Woodbridge d. 1712 in Woodbridge m. Christian
4. William Moores b. Woodbridge d. Woodbridge
5. William Moores b. 1742 Woodbridge d. 18 June 1827 Lincoln Co. TN
The given names are matches for traditional given names in the Chesapeake!
More than a dozen Moore immigrant heads of households appeared in the
Chesapeake during the Interregnum years of 1649-1660! All of have been
tracked to determine if they remained and left descendants.
William is a name of great frequency among the Chesapeake Moores. In fact, I
sometimes believe it may have been more common than John and James.
Edward Moore, a merchant-mariner immigrated to Virginia's Eastern Shore in
1656 and left a substantial estate about 20 years later. The name appears
often in the lines on the western shore of the Chesapeake. Another Edward
Moore left a will in Anne Arundel County, MD in 1709.
Matthew Moore is, perhaps, even more distinctive. One Matthew Moore was born
in St. Olave's Parish, Southwarke, England in the early 1600s. His father
was Thomas Moore (perhaps the same Thomas Moore who was a resident of
Southwarke who also appears to be the Thomas Moore who was a member of the
Virginia Company of London.) Matthew Moore was also born to Thomas Moore who
lived on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Thomas Moore immigrated at the same
time as did Edward Moore, 1656. Another Matthew Moore died in Charles Co MD
in 1767. And another Matthew Moore, son of John Moore (d. 1777) of Albemarle
Co VA moved to Stokes County, NC, and became my ancestor.
Francis Moore is also a very traditional name in this group of Chesapeake
Moores. One Francis Moore was a merchant in Essex County, Virginia in the
late 1700s. We also find Francis Moore on the Eastern Shore. He was the
owner of the ship "Dublin Merchant."
There are numerous Chesapeake Moores named Henry. One died in Charles Co MD
in 1737, and another in Princess Anne County VA in the late 1600s.
I think that we are closing in on an English root family for many of these
17th century Moores. And we discovered that it is probably the same family
represented by Richard Moore, Mayflower passenger, and whose grave site is
the only known Mayflower grave site.
Among the first generation American Moores were a number whom we can clearly
identify as merchant/mariners. That being the case, they might also have
representatives in Ireland and Massachusetts.
I would be interested in knowing how it was concluded that Edward Moore of
Massachusetts was from Ireland.
