Tom-
I'm not trying to discourage you from trying to get Masonic records but I
have gotten some from the 1880's from the Atlanta, GA area and really all
they said was person joined this date and left this date. However, it
seems that each lodge might keep different types of records based on what
your brother had. So... I recommend the book:
"Researching Masonic Records - A Guide for Genealogists" by John S. Yates
[1997]. This is a 27 page booklet that cost $7.00 from Heritage Quest
(www.heritagequest.com) in Utah. I learned a lot from the book and have
not seen any other books written specifically for genealogists about
Masonry. It gives a background on masonry. Dispels some myths, give
address to grand lodges in the US and Canada, give suggestions on what to
request and expect and gives sample letters. I believe that the author,
John S. Yates', email address is: and web page is at:
http://www.wf.net/~jyates

Yates says that if you are not sure the lodge exists to write to the Grand
lodge in the state and while they might not have your ancestor's records,
they may give you the address of the lodge that has the records. So for TN
the addresses from Yates book are:

Box 24216
Nashville, TN 37202

another address is (not sure if this is same lodge and just the street
address)
100 7th Avenue North
Nashville, TN 37203

I wrote to some Atlanta, GA area lodges in May 1998 with the plans of
stopping there in July 1998 and just now received a reply in April 1999!
Be patient. These people are not paid to do this research. Good luck.

I am not very familiar with the Masonic organization, but apparently my
grandfather KING was a member of such a group while residing in Lincoln Co.
TN during the late 1800's. Do you know of an address where they might
release
personal data on a deceased member to a non-mason relative?

My brother, Samuel B. KING of Nashville, TN, recently sent me a copy of a
Masonic Chart that was apparently issued to my grandfather's cousin.
According to oral family history they both belonged to the same Lodge.

My grandfather's cousin's name was S. J. Mc'Ants or McCants. The document
displays Masonic symbols in color. Near the bottom of the documents it
shows
that "S. J. Mc'Ants was a member of the Chestnut Ridge Lodge No. 499, F.&
A.
(?) M. R., July 19, 1888." The document is in apparent good shape, except
the
data following the Lodge Number is not clear. I don't think the
organization
still exists, but I guess it is possible.

Any suggestions and thoughts on this matter will be much appreciated.
