Just to ditto the traffic on Masonic roots......what has been said so
far is correct, but when dealing with Masonic Lodges, one should
remember that lodges that demise(or cease to exist)are supposed to
forward their records to their governing Grand Lodge for
storage/archiving. Back in the last century, this practice was not
always done; many secretaries of demised lodges simply kept the records
in their personal possession. Also, in the South, many lodges records
were destroyed during the War of Northern Aggression, even though many
of the bretheren on both sides tried hard not to allow such atrocities.
So, lodge records may be extremely difficult to locate, especially if
you are looking in southern states or if your ancestor's lodge is no
longer active.

Since I am a Freemason and have many Freemasons in my lineage charts, I
can assure you that this is an accurate description of how things state
vis a vis lodge records.
