Date: Sun, 6 Jun 1999 20:31:04 EDT
Hi Folks:
Received the following WWW search engines list from one of my genealogy
correspondents. I have used some of the older engines from time to time, but
not the newer ones. You may find them helpful, especially if you are new to
the net.
Tom King, Sr. San Diego, CA.
Extracted from Information Outlook: Article by Amelia Kassel, April 1999,
outlines search engines:
Direct Search <http://gwis.circ.gwu.edu/~gprice/direct.htm>, searches
archives and library catalogs for requested topic.
AltaVista (<http://www.altavista.com>, powerful and popular, good for
specific searches
Excite <http://www.excite.com>, searches on broad, general topics
Dogpile <http://www.dogpile.com>, searches through several search engines
Internet Sleuth <http://www.isleuth.com>, searches 3,000
specialized online databases
MetaCrawler <http://www.metacrawler.com> searches through several search
engines and sorts the results
Profusion <http://www.profusion.com> lets one select the engines to search &
filters duplicates
SavvySearch <http://www.savvysearch.com> searches several engines via one
query
