Subject: [LCT] State of Tennessee Land Grants
Date: Fri, 02 Nov 2001 06:44:56 -0800
The following is the message I received from Marylin Hughes of the
Tennessee State Archives, regarding the possible existance of further
documentation supporting land grants made by the State of Tennessee:
"There are no applications for land grants. A person who may have
wanted
to obtain land in Tennessee simply went to the land office (wherever it
was then located and entered to obtain land). A fee was paid and later
the warrant and survey and finally the grant was given (or paid). There
were fees all along the route to obtaining land but most of the
documents may be lost.
Most land grants in Tennessee were not given but some fees were paid.
Also, most were not for Military service from North Carolina in the
Revolutionary War. They were simply to help populate the land at a
cheap price that would allow the new county (where the land was located)
to pay for the upkeep of the services which the county needed to make."
