Am looking for anything about James Barnes whose children included Telita and
Ruth Ellen. It seems James may have given parcels of land to his
children(don't know if it was wedding gifts or bequeaths). I have a deed
transfer that indicates that a parcel of land had been inherited from James
Barnes by Teletha Barnes Brotherton and sold to Pleasant Halbert by her
heirs. In turn this same parcel of land was sold to the son of Ruth Ellen and
Ruth Ellen's sister in law Ruth Swaner Mitchell. The property in question had
a church built on it by the son, Elias Swaner, but was destroyed by fire and
never rebuilt. My concern is that there may be a graveyard near by the church
ruins. Ruth Swaner Mitchel is buried in Gill Cem. Ruth Ellen and her husband
Obediah Bryant Richardson Swaner lived in Cyruston at one time.
James Barnes bought land from Joseph Jones 1-11-1840 situated on the waters
of Carrs Crk of Elk river bonded by 50 Ac grant to Wm Cunningham on Jas
Askins line, Jeremiah Hedgepath line. Mentions a horn beam on bridge waters
line. Asumwe this refers to a bridge over the creek.
Land sale from Teletha Brotherton heirs to Pleasant Halbert to Swanner/
Mitchell 4-4-1890 is described as lying and being on the headwaters of Rees
Crk in 13th dist bounded by E S Bearden and George Bevels on north, Rev
Debose on south, eat by land of E S Bearden and S O Green and on west by land
of Mrs Ruth Swanner. Above described tract is part of land of the late Jas
Barnes that was allotted to Mrs Teletha Brotherton in the division of land &
purchased by be(Pleasant Halbert) from the heirs of Teletha Brotherton. I
believe the Ruth Swanner mentioned is my great grandmother, Ruth Ellen Barnes
Swanner.
Do any of the names listed as bounding this property ring any bells in
reference to location near your Barnes. Can someone help me locate this
parcel? It most likely includes fifty acres or more. Seems James & Elenore
Barnes lived in 1st Sub in 1850 at 780/780. Next door 781/781 was Ezekial
Barnes and family. 782/782 was Obediah and Ruth Ellen Barnes Swanner. Teletha
& husband John Brotherton lived 830/830.
ANY help appreciated. Donna Hanlon
