Yes, it's a fascinating subject and I want to thank everybody who has
responded to my question. I still don't have a real clear idea of what
Black Dutch really means, but I believe that what you said, Cindy, makes a
lot of sense about them being half white and half Indian, and not wanting to
let anybody know that. Everybody in my family - my brothers and sisters,
that is - we all had very dark brown hair, brown eyes that were a little bit
almond shaped, and a fair complexion. My hair was (I say "was" because it's
now getting so much gray in it) the darkest of all - it actually looked more
black than brown. My complexion is very light and I always found it hard to
get a tan in the summer, but not hard at all to get a burn. Of course,
that's probably my Scot-Irish-English heritage coming into play. Some of my
surnames for the purpose of Black Dutch discussion were: Gilbert or
Guilbirt, Strickland, Braswell, Canady or Canada, Brown, Thomas, Greene,
Merritt, Pitt/Pitts, Lamar, Ashby, Winfield, Sherard, Dickey, and the ones
who were in Lincoln Co. were Clark, Cowan and McKee. My Johnson's, I'm
pretty sure, were Scots - they even called my grandfather John "Mac" Johnson
and his brother, Jim "Mac" Johnson. I know nobody asked for this info, but
just thought I would throw it in. Hope it's okay.
