My husband's family came originally from near Orleans, France. They were
named LeTourliane-sic which meant barrel maker in France. During the
religion uprising, they escaped over the border into Germany and their name
was changed to Keiffer/Keefer/Kifer which meant barrel maker in Germany.
When they came to America in mid 1700's mostly, their names were spelled
according to how the men on board the ship understood what they called
themselves. There are many Keefer's/ etc in America now that originally
spelled their names the same in the old country.
During WW I, it was not popular to be German. Some changed their name to
Cooper then. All had trade of barrel makers originally no matter how their
names were changed.
