Subject: Grahams in Bedford and Marshall, early 1800s
Date: Mon, 08 May 2006 08:49:44 -0600
I'm trying to sort out some Grahams in Bedford and Marshall counties.
The deed abstract at the bottom of this e-mail (registered in 1821)
names a John and a James Graham, heirs of William Graham of
Mecklenburg, NC, who lived in the western part of Bedford. Evidently,
they were later in Marshall County when the line changed.
Also in western Bedford was a Joshua Graham, who purchased property
in Farmington in 1828 and sold it in 1829, at which time he was
living in Hardeman County. This Joshua Graham married Sarah Shaw, d/o
James Shaw, probably after 1820. There are records of a James Shaw in
Bedford (e.g., in William Bell's district in the 1812 tax list), but
I have not yet investigated these.
In the eastern part of the county is another John Graham. He's in the
tax list of 1812 and then in the 1820 census. Soon after that, he
moved on to Lawrence County, GA. This John Graham had married
Catherine Sutton in Logan County, KY, in 1806, and his father-in-law,
Jacob Sutton, originally of SC, was also on the 1812 tax list in
Bedford. Both were in James Walker's district. I believe that this
John Graham and Joshua Graham were brothers; both eventually ended up
in Benton County, MO, and their families there had many connections.
Both John and Joshua had sons named John and James, and John also had
a son named William.
I would like to establish whether John and/or Joshua Graham were
connected to the John and James Graham in the deed below. I'm hoping
somebody can help! Thanks.
